Meet our final panelist, Jimmy Garcia. As a former inmate, he spent eight years and seven months in a California State Prison. While on parole, they sent him to the career services center for training, after telling them about his convictions, they told him that because of the crime they weren’t going to waste their money on him. Reporting this to parole, the Parole Agent told him that he should try Bakersfield College. Last year, he was able to transfer from BC to California State University, Bakersfield and was accepted into the Sociology program. He was accepted into the Hellen Louise Hawk Honors program. A program that only accepts the brightest and the best students at CSUB.

Today it brings him so much happiness to be able to see the light at the end of the tunnel (From Prison, to BC, and now to CSUB’s undergraduate Sociology program). He can honestly say that financial aid and the scholarships’ program have been his primary support system of why he was able to successfully graduate Bakersfield College with two Associate of Arts degrees, one in human services, and the other in Communication.

His future career plan is to utilize his degree in the Sociological/human services field to assist and help those with the desire to rehabilitate in the field of drug/alcohol rehabilitation, and to help others that he knows will one day be turned away from programs similar to his own experiences.

What an amazing story. What an outstanding accomplishment. We are insanely grateful to have Mr. Garcia as a panelist participating in our Latinos On The Rise event.
