💜Mentor Moment Spotlight💜

"What does it look like to struggle socially? To be told your child has inattentive ADHD? Being a mother of a child who struggled with the latter, it is not easy. What are the options? Meds? Therapy? School options, classroom support? I chose none of these. Instead, I chose to embrace my daughters 'challenges' or exuberant personality boosters, and love her as she was, embracing her uniqueness as God had made her.

These thoughts all came flooding back to me as I read through my mentee’s inquiry form.
"social struggles, self-doubt, inattentive ADHD…Our first week of mentorship sessions I caught a glimpse of these 'personality descriptors,' but I also saw
something else. I saw a very bright, respectful young man who loved animals and especially loved the horse he chose, Gabe. Additionally, he also showed a very strong connection to one of our rescue cats, Munchkin. From the moment they met, Gabe (aka the barn clown) lovingly reached out and grabbed my mentee's attention and held onto it.

"Our first session activity zeroed in on 'fears.' After spending time brushing and 'talking' with Gabe I suggested we do our popular horse painting activity. Using bold, ‘non-toxic’ washable paint sticks, I asked my mentee to write on Gabe’s left side any self-descriptive words that came to mind, as well as some of his biggest fears. Meanwhile, I went to work on the opposite side, writing words I felt best described my mentee. The results? Without hesitating or fumbling for the right words this young man described each word, and phrase he wrote, and what each one meant to him. His two biggest fears? Heights and snakes. Very real fears. Underneath those two fears he wrote, 'Life is a Wonder.' Wow! We then discussed putting FAITH over fear and how God is bigger than our biggest fears. Without hesitating he wrote FAITH above and over his fears.

"His description of Life is a Wonder? "Life is full of lots of amazing things."
My descriptive words of my mentee? “Kind, smart, gentle, funny, loves animals.”
Which ‘labels’ would you rather live life by?

"During our third session week:

"I just LOVE being here!" My mentee’s loud, confident proclamation left no room for doubt. His obvious joy was
all-consuming as I watched him gently and purposefully brush Gabe, until his cream-colored mane glistened in the morning sun.
My mentee's morning was made complete by a special visit and extra cuddle time from his favorite cat, Munchkin.
That morning we discovered two unlikely friends, although very different, from each other, and very different in size, were not at all ‘fearful’ of one another, Gabe and Munchkin.

A highlight from todays session was when my mentee discovered munchkins coping mechanism, or defense tactic. While holding munchkin, Gabe proceeded to play, nuzzling him rather repetitively until it irritated Munchkin who would attempt a swat or two in Gabe’s direction. Instead of jumping out of my mentee's arms and running away, she buried her head in the crook of his protective arms. This small but profound act triggered the conversation of how God protects us from harm. "Whenever we are afraid of something, all we need to do is ask and He will wrap us in His protective arms."

WE STRUCK GOLD!!

Our Equine Wellness Team Lead, Emily, thought she was being pranked W***y Wonka style 😁

Emily was weighing our rescue draft, Tator, and sadly his weight dropped. Tator's weight is constantly being monitored with his advanced age and Cushing's disease. Emily realized he would need yet another increase of feed. With the increase of feed of course comes increased cost. Please note: that we gladly accept any adjustment needed in finances to support our beloved boy and any other equine in our family.

Emily finished weighing Tator, and returned to our feed room to prepare the evening mash for the few who need it. As she dug the scoop into the feed can, a surprise emerged! A golden ticket from Tribute 💜

The prize?!? 40 FREE BAGS of Tator's feed! 🎉

When sharing this discovery, Emily stated, "Sometimes God is less mysterious and more incredibly direct! Thank the Lord!"

Yes, thank the LORD for his continual provisions to Hope's Haven and the mission we have been called to uphold in his good name 🙌

Thank you Tribute for this amazing gift. Thank you Brandt's in Elizabethtown for being our reliable supplier.

💜Mentor Moment Spotlight💜

"A horse heart connecting with a human heart on a 90 plus degree day with Words, Wisdom, Water and Wonder. In this order, positive and negative WORDS were written on the side of Hope in response to my mentee's feelings when stressful events happen in her life. (markers safe for horses) Hope was patient as the words of negative emotions verses positive emotions were written on one side and pictures to represent these words were drawn on the other side. These represented the WISDOM of a horse and human connection. The negative words were washed away first with the WATER from the garden hose while giving Hope a bath. My mentee touched the positive words on Hope and then touched her heart to remember and WONDER when the next time she will need them." (Sue, of her Spring mentee)

💜Mentor Moment Spotlight💜
"I was in awe of my 10 year old mentee. The previous week he was quite frightened when his chosen horse, Rita, bellowed a neigh. This week he was very apprehensive about approaching Rita thinking she would neigh loudly again. He slowly began to take small steps towards her and began to gently touch her face. Rita was calm and responsive to his touch. Their eyes were locked onto each other. He began to understand Rita had not tried to scare him. She merely was calling out to her stable mate. He stepped back into their relationship.
"Facing our fears by talking about them, trying to understand the origin and taking steps to calm ourselves is an opportunity to pray. We didn’t pray together but I talked about prayer as a connection to God. I am praying for him." (Karen Boyer, of her Spring mentee)

This month we are celebrating our volunteers that have been with Hope's Haven for 5 years 🎉 We are blessed to have these 5 AMAZING VOLUNTEERS.

Deborah Benner has been a wonderful partner of Hope's Haven and belongs to one of our very first mentee families! Deborah has seen the need and supports in huge ways. We are humbly indebted to all that Deborah and her husband, Arlin, have provided over these last few years!

Laura Madura gives time in our barn after working night shift and is the gifter of cat food & goat cookies for our many barn friends!

Sue Kob is our Volunteer Coordinator, a Mentor Leader, and assists with barn work and horse care.

Christin & Ceylan Riesterer are a mother-daughter duo who assist with our Mini Volunteer program, barn work, and horse care. Christin is also our Assistant Program Coordinator and a Mentor Leader.

Thank you ladies for how you contribute countless hours to making Hope's Haven a place to serve those in need of love, HOPE, and healing!

Shedding season at the barn is no joke! No one is safe from all of the hair flying around. And everyone leaves with at least one or more colors of hair covering their clothing. The minis even get involved helping each other with shedding scratches 💜
