Doggone it!

Hello everyone. Hope you’re all having a great summer.

We want to provide you with a brief update about one of our most popular and beneficial efforts, the ‘Clean Beach’ project. This week, we had to make the difficult decision to cancel the beach trash pickup for the remainder of this season. There are several reasons why – contractor issues, beach closures for sea turtle nests, and a general shortage of available labor, just to name a few.

We’ve worked like a dog to find a viable alternative to canceling the beach trash pickup but so far, we’ve been unsuccessful.

So, if you receive questions or complaints from your visitors about why our familiar red ‘Beach Respect’ trash cans are no longer available, we thought you should know why. We’ll continue to work on a solution for next year’s season and will update you when we can.

In the meantime, we hope you enjoy the remaining dog days of summer.

Have you heard of the seven principles of the Leave No Trace program? The individuals responsible for digging this trench in Avon last night broke four out of seven of the principles. Leaving such a large hole in the beach can lead to serious visitor injuries, damage to emergency response vehicles, delays in responding to swimming-related emergencies, and could prevent sea turtle hatchlings from making it safely to the ocean.

Please be considerate of other visitors, including visiting wildlife, by leaving no trace of your beach visit.

We appreciate the concerned visitors who reported this large hole to our staff. If they had not reported it, the hole may have filled with the recent rain water and created additional hazards to children and adults walking along the beach. Thank you to those who helped fill the hole back in so nobody got hurt!

Just another day on a Sandbar.

There is a predicted King Tide event starting Monday, January 29th that continues through Friday, February 2nd as a result of lunar perigee (Jan. 30th) and the full moon (Jan. 31st) occurring less than a day apart. But wait, there's more! This particular full moon is the second full moon to occur in the same calendar month, also known as a Blue Moon. It will also feature a lunar eclipse which is when the moon passes into Earth's shadow. Visit our website to submit your photos and reports: http://nckingtides.web.unc.edu/
