Environmentally Speaking is part of a year-long environmental series, presented in partnership with the Avon Lake Public Library and Avon Lake’s Avon Lake Environmental Affairs Advisory Board (EAAB), that addresses the environmental concerns of Avon Lake's residents. Each session focuses on a different topic presented by experts who will educate, as well as provide tools and resources for making an impact in our community.

The EAAB values the community concerns and opinions regarding the power plant property, and we encourage presence at our meetings. Historically, the EAAB has been limited to a 10 minute presentation at each CIC meeting but the city appointed board has been further relegated to participate in the public comment period and was removed from the agenda. CIC is the body in which we are required (by the city) to communicate through, and they are the group that is responsible for disseminating power plant information publicly because that’s where decisions are being made. The EAAB is not a body of decision-making, but a group of research and education. Their minutes and presentations can be found at the link below:

All information discussed at EAAB meetings is recorded and included on the city website for every citizens’ viewing. If any Avon Lake community member has questions, concerns, or would like more details regarding information being shared at the monthly meetings, please don’t hesitate to attend a meeting or reach out to our board Chairman, Sam Naumann at [email protected]. Meetings are held the first Wednesday of the month except for the months of July and August. They are at 6:30 p.m. at the Avon Lake Public Library's McMahan meeting room.

The City has heard from residents concerned about aggressive coyotes in our community. On August 8, you will have the opportunity to learn how we can live in harmony with the animals around us. Randy White, State Wildlife Officer for Lorain County, will present his program “Coexisting with Nature” and answer your questions. Please register today: https://alpl.librarymarket.com/event/environmentally-speaking-coexisting-nature

If you are unable to attend, a video of the presentation will be on the City website after the presentation date. https://www.avonlake.org/communications-technology/videos?keyword=&category_id=20

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources provides the following tips if a coyote is in your backyard:

Coyotes are common throughout Ohio's 88 counties in both rural and urban settings.

If you do have a coyote on your property, remove all "attractants" to possibly deter the coyote from returning. This includes removing garbage and pet food before nightfall and cleaning up around the grill. Coyotes prey primarily on small mammals, such as rabbits and mice. Small pets may also be taken. Keep small dogs and cats inside.

Coyotes are curious, but generally fearful of humans. Clap your hands and shout in a stern voice to scare off coyotes that are investigating your yard.

Earlier this month, three Commissioners from the Tree Commission attended the 2023 North Coast Urban Forestry Conference. The Keynote speaker was Mark Bays with the Oklahoma Forestry Service. He shared the story of the Survivor Tree that was 15’ from the Federal Building that in 1995 a 5000 lb truck bomb shattered reducing 1/3 of it to rubble including a daycare. 168 souls were loss with hundreds injured in this senseless act. This charred, broken, native tree survived. The tree has come to represent hope and healing as today it stands strong. Seedlings from the Survivor Tree are planted all over the United States. The Tree Commission had an opportunity to acquire a Survivor Tree Seedling. It was planted in Miller Road Park just east of the Wildflower Garden where it can grow to a height of 60’ – 80’ with a spread of 40’ – 50’. We want to bring people's attention to the tree so if they see this little cage around a seedling, they know that it is so much more. The Survivor tree is an American Elm, Ulmus americana. The inscription by the tree reads, “The heart of this city and nation is rooted in strength, hope, and the resiliency of the American spirit.”

Tune in tonight to the Collective Committee Meeting of City Council at 7pm on Facebook or the city's website to watch the dedication!
