📢 PSA: Nonprofit Does Not Mean “Free Labor”📢
We’d like to clarify something important about how our nonprofit lawn care service operates.
Being a nonprofit and offering deeply discounted services does not mean our time, labor, equipment, fuel, hauling, disposal, and operating expenses have no value. It also does not mean that paying clients are entitled to additional work at no charge.
Our pricing is intentionally kept affordable and is carefully calculated based on the work being performed. We also look for ways to save our clients money by utilizing free resources whenever possible. For example, if your borough provides a free yard-waste collection day, we may coordinate work around that service rather than adding hauling and disposal costs to your bill. If a client chooses not to use an available free option and instead requests additional hauling, disposal, labor, or services, those costs cannot automatically be absorbed by our nonprofit.
We serve a wide spectrum of customers, from those paying our standard rates to individuals receiving substantial discounts; and in qualifying circumstances, completely free services. Some of the greatest challenges we encounter with requests for additional unpaid work do not come from those with the greatest financial need.
If a project is quoted at a certain price and a client only wants to spend one-third of that amount, we are happy to discuss reducing the scope—but one-third of the price cannot purchase 100% of the work. The scope of work must reflect the amount being paid.
We don't determine someone's circumstances based on appearances, and we believe everyone deserves to be treated respectfully. However, financial ability does not create entitlement to nonprofit resources. Our mission exists to make services accessible—not to subsidize unnecessary costs for those capable of paying for the work they request.
Most importantly, discounted service does not mean our staff or volunteers should be pressured, bullied, or made to feel guilty for declining work that was not included in the agreed-upon price. We are always willing to discuss options and help where we reasonably can, but kindness and professionalism must go both ways.
When a client already receiving one of our lowest rates demands additional work for free, that cost doesn't disappear. Our nonprofit absorbs it. That means time, labor, and funding are taken away from our ability to provide free or reduced-cost services to elderly residents, individuals with disabilities, veterans, single parents, widows/widowers, and others experiencing genuine need.
Every dollar we save allows us to keep our rates affordable and continue providing free or reduced-cost services where we deem necessary.
We are always willing to discuss budgets. We can reduce a scope of work, utilize free municipal resources, prioritize the most important items, or find another reasonable solution. What we cannot do is continually provide additional labor for free simply because we are a nonprofit.
We are proud to serve our community and remain committed to being affordable, compassionate, fair, and responsible with the resources entrusted to us. In return, we ask our clients to respect our staff, pricing, our boundaries, and the value of the work being provided.
Nonprofit means putting our resources back into our mission. It does not mean our work has no value. 💚
