A Big Thank You to Southside Market and Barbecue‼️

We are excited to announce that Southside Market and Barbecue, the oldest BBQ joint in Texas, is joining us as a BBQ sponsor in our support for the Carver Juneteenth Kickback event! Accessibility is vital to ensuring that everyone can experience and appreciate the rich history and culture at the George Washington Carver Museum, Cultural and Genealogy Center (GWCM).

The George Washington Carver Ambassadors (GWCA), the 501c3 support arm of the GWCM, is dedicated to supporting the museum's mission and the encouragement of all our community to explore the offerings of the space.

On behalf of the GWCA, Ambassador Alta Alexander and her husband, Lamont Alexander, have generously donated a new wheelchair and three walkers. This thoughtful contribution represents a significant step toward enhancing accessibility for all our visitors. “With these new mobility aids, we are creating a more inclusive environment that allows individuals of all abilities to engage with the museum exhibits and community programs,” expressed Alta. 🦽

Together, we are cultivating a space where everyone can connect, learn, and grow.

Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans in Texas learned of their freedom, representing a new beginning filled with hope. Barbecue became a vital part of these celebrations, fostering unity and resilience.
The vibrant sauces and grilled meats served symbolize the sacrifices of ancestors and the enduring spirit of the African American community. Barbecue is a cultural expression that connects people to their heritage.

Many thanks to our sponsors, and , for their contributions to this celebration. Their support helps preserve this rich tradition as we honor the spirit of Juneteenth for future generations.

A total 400 links of sausages were donated! This incredible in-kind contribution helps offset the costs incurred by and develop partnerships with community supporters for the Museum and its inaugural Carver Juneteenth Kickback!

Come celebrate with the George Washington Carver Ambassadors in their support and honor of the legacy of George Washington Carver Museum’s commemoration of Juneteenth!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

While often seen as a celebration of Irish-American culture, the holiday also has deep connections to African American history. Historically, Irish immigrants and free African Americans faced both competition and collaboration in the 19th century, sharing neighborhoods and struggles. Despite tensions, there are surprising links and shared abolitionist efforts like those of Frederick Douglass and Irish abolitionist Daniel O'Connell.

In Montserrat, the "Emerald Isle of the Caribbean," St. Patrick’s Day is commemorated with a festival that honors both Irish heritage and the legacy of resistance among enslaved Africans. Today, we celebrate not only the Irish culture but also the intersecting histories of resilience and unity between these communities.

Let's take a moment to reflect on these rich shared histories and honor the bonds that have shaped our cultures. 🌍🍀✊🏾
