Women often retire early or take time off to care for an elderly parent. This can result in fewer opportunities for advancement at work, lower social security retirement benefits at retirement and less in IRA and 401(k)s saved for their own retirement. When added to wage gaps and workplace barriers this can significantly shape their economic security later in life.

On May 6th, Benjamin Rose is hosting a free webinar to explore the impact of unpaid caregiving and some practical policy solutions. Sign up here: https://www.benrose.org/event/katz26/

Most Homes Aren’t Designed for Aging in Place—But They Can Be

Most of us assume we’ll stay in our homes a .
But here’s the reality: most homes weren’t designed with aging in mind.

Stairs at the entry. Narrow doorways. Poor lighting. Slippery bathrooms.
These aren’t just inconveniences—they can become real barriers to independence.

The good news? Small, thoughtful changes can make a big difference.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing practical tips, local resources, and real-world guidance to help individuals and families navigate aging with confidence — whether that means staying in your own home, moving to a senior living community, or living with family.

We’ll focus on the 5 Pillars of Aging that shape independence and quality of life:

• Housing – safe, comfortable, and adaptable living spaces
• Health & Wellness – proactive care, prevention, and daily well-being
• Finances – planning ahead for the cost of aging
• Transportation – staying mobile and connected
• Social Connection – because independence doesn’t mean isolation

We’ll also be announcing free local workshops and events at libraries, senior centers, and throughout the community.

If you’re planning ahead — or helping a parent navigate these decisions — this is for you.

• Follow us to stay informed
• And tell us: what questions do you have about aging well?

This week’s focus for National Social Security Month:
💰 Plan For Your Future

We know Social Security is an important piece of the puzzle...but it’s not the full plan.

April is also National Financial Capability Month, and there’s no better time to commit to supporting individuals and families in their quest to be more financially stable by saving successfully and reducing debt.

Real aging-in-place planning includes:
• Understanding your benefits
• Estimating future income
• Evaluating housing needs
• Preparing for support over time
The earlier these conversations happen, the more options families have.

April is National Social Security Month, and this week’s focus is:

🔐 Protect Your Information | Guard Your Card

Scams targeting older adults are becoming more common, and more convincing.

Here’s what to remember:
• Social Security will NEVER call and threaten you
• Never share your Social Security number over the phone or text
• Always verify before responding to urgent requests

Protecting personal information is a key part of aging in place safely.

Because financial security = independence.

April is National Social Security Month.

For many older adults, Social Security is a key part of maintaining independence.

But here’s the truth:
One has to be able to understand how those benefits can support long-term stability.

Education is a major component to our mission and the Social Security Administration is one of our first stops toward helping Austins' older adult make confident decisions.

it’s a *health decision*.

At the Greater Austin Chapter for the National Aging in Place Council, we’re working to connect older adults and families to the resources that make all of this possible.
