“We have come dangerously close to accepting the homeless situation as a problem that we just can't solve.”

- Linda Lingl

Here’s the thing- we CAN put an end to homelessness. Take action in your community.

Good morning and happy Friday! Today is a wonderful day to help the homeless. I challenge YOU to give at least one dollar to a homeless person today. It’s a great way to start off your weekend. :)

YOU can help the homeless and take action! There are plenty of groups in Austin that you can donate your time and talent to.
Some examples are:
Mobile Loaves and Fishes

Green Doors

Front Steps

Don’t be the person that ignores the homeless person you see on the street corner everyday. What you may see as a small gesture can make a tremendous impact for someone else.

What We Do DELIVERING MORE THAN A SANDWICH Mobile Loaves & Fishes' food truck volunteers hit the streets 7 nights a week, 365 days a year to serve the homeless, delivering food, clothing, hygiene

Homelessness in Austin did not become prevalent until after the 80’s, but is rapidly increasing due to massive population growth. In the last year, the City of Austin has identified 2,147 people experiencing homelessness and 1,014 people living on the streets. The homeless are typically living downtown, around Congress Ave. Advocacy groups believe that it will take at least $30 million each year to cover the services and beds that the homeless need to survive. City council members acknowledge that there aren’t enough beds for everyone, but are not currently addressing the issue.

Homelessness doesn’t just occur in the United States. It takes place all over the world. It really became prominent internationally after World War 2, seeing as hundreds of families were left displaced and without homes. But, a HUGE factor in international homelessness is the world’s economy. As the global population is increasing, so are are unemployment rates. The United Nations has also declared housing as a right and is hoping to put an end to homelessness internationally by the year 2030. Another organization working to fight against homelessness is DePaul International: Institute of Global Homelessness, based in Chicago. I’ll link their website in the comments, so that you all can check out them and their work.

Our group took action after school this past Monday. Everyone pitched in and donated a few necessities (i.e. food, water, hygiene products, etc) and made care bags to hand out to the homeless. The group went downtown and passed the bags out to the homeless. The group also had a few in-depth conversations with some of the homeless. It was very emotional on both ends and we were touched by their willingness to share their life stories. This take action was easy and stress-free and still tremendously helped a few members of the homeless population in Austin. A good, simple idea to help the homeless and for YOU to take action is to always have a few bags with the necessities stored in your car. That way, when you pass a homeless person, you have something to give them!
