🤝 Building Connections in Our Community!

Austin TAAP recently had the opportunity to connect with Katherine Trevino from St. Edward’s University, who works with students in the field of neuroscience.

Lawerence Spain, President of Austin TAAP, and Chriss Parker, Austin TAAP Board Member and Career Development Chair, joined the conversation as we discussed opportunities to connect, collaborate, and help bridge the gap between education, behavioral health, addiction treatment, and the recovery community.

We’re excited about the opportunity to build relationships with local universities and connect students with professionals, resources, education, and real-world experience in our field.

Thank you, Katherine, for taking the time to meet with us! We look forward to staying connected and exploring ways Austin TAAP and St. Edward’s can work together in the future. 💙

We’re excited to introduce Joseph Gorordo, a dedicated behavioral health professional and leader who brings more than 15 years of experience in substance use treatment, recovery advocacy, and program development to Austin TAAP.

Joseph is a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC) and Certified Wellness Coach who has worked in the substance use treatment field since 2009. In recovery himself since 2008, Joseph has built a career centered around helping individuals and communities find meaningful pathways to healing and long-term recovery.

His commitment to strengthening the recovery community has also included serving as a Board Member of RecoveryPeople and as President of the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals (TAAP). Throughout his career, Joseph has helped build and develop a variety of programs, including residential treatment, intensive outpatient programs, and extended care programs. His experience gives him a broad perspective on the many levels of support individuals may need throughout their recovery journey.

Sponsor Highlight: Extra Mile Recovery
We’re proud to spotlight Extra Mile Recovery, an organization dedicated to helping individuals find lasting freedom from addiction and build meaningful lives in recovery.
Located in Mississippi, provides individualized, gender-specific addiction treatment through separate men’s and women’s programs. Their intentionally small treatment settings allow their team to provide personalized care while creating an environment centered on connection, accountability, healing, and long-term recovery.

Their continuum of care includes medical detox, residential treatment, dual-diagnosis care, chronic relapse treatment, sober living support, aftercare, and alumni programming. Treatment is designed to meet each person where they are and help them build the tools needed for life beyond treatment.

Extra Mile combines evidence-based clinical care with 12-Step principles and holistic support. Services may include individual, group, and family therapy; CBT and DBT; trauma-focused EMDR; medication-assisted treatment; relapse prevention; case management; mindfulness; meditation; movement; and outdoor activities.

Lived experience is also an important part of their culture. Many members of the Extra Mile team understand addiction and recovery personally, helping create an environment rooted in empathy, authenticity, and the belief that recovery is possible.
Their work is about more than getting someone sober — it’s about helping people develop relationships, coping skills, accountability, purpose, and a strong foundation for lasting recovery.

Thank you, Extra Mile Recovery, for supporting Austin TAAP and investing in the greater recovery community! Partnerships like these help us strengthen professional relationships, connect people with quality resources, and create more pathways to recovery.

đź’ś Kicking Off the 2026 ACC Conference on Addiction and Recovery!

Austin TAAP was grateful to join the kickoff celebration for Austin Community College’s 2026 Conference on Addiction and Recovery!

A special thank you to Courtney Fowler for welcoming Austin TAAP and giving us the opportunity to be part of this important event and help spread awareness, share resources, and strengthen connections for those seeking recovery and the professionals and community members who support them.

Taking place during National Recovery Month, the ACC Conference on Addiction and Recovery brings our community together to increase awareness around substance use disorders, connect people with behavioral health resources, reduce stigma, and encourage help-seeking and recovery.

We’re proud to support opportunities like this that bring education, resources, recovery, and community together. Thank you to Courtney and the ACC team for allowing Austin TAAP to be a part of it! 💙

Nonprofit of the Month: The Other Ones Foundation
This month, Austin TAAP is proud to highlight (TOOF), an Austin-based nonprofit working to create pathways out of homelessness through low-barrier shelter, meaningful work, workforce development, case management, and connections to stable housing.

TOOF recognizes that homelessness is complex and that moving forward often requires more than meeting an immediate need. Their programs give people opportunities to earn income, develop skills, find stability, access resources, and become part of a supportive community.

One of their cornerstone programs is Esperanza Community, a low-barrier emergency shelter where residents have access to individual shelter units along with personalized case management, housing navigation, wellness services, employment opportunities, and vocational development.

Their Workforce First program creates opportunities for people experiencing homelessness to earn income through work while building skills, confidence, and connections. TOOF also provides vocational skills training, barrier-busting assistance, housing-focused support, and other services designed to help individuals overcome obstacles on their path toward stability.

And their impact is incredible. In 2025 alone, TOOF:
Served 619 unduplicated clients
Helped 183 people move into stable housing
Paid $642,000 in earned income to people experiencing homelessness
Helped remove more than 434,000 pounds of trash from Austin's green spaces

For those of us working in behavioral health, substance use treatment, and recovery, organizations like TOOF are important community partners. Housing, employment, purpose, connection, and stability can all play an important role in helping people build healthier lives.

Austin TAAP is proud to recognize The Other Ones Foundation as our Nonprofit of the Month and celebrate the work they are doing for our neighbors and our greater Austin community.
