This red-shouldered hawk got stuck in a pool with just a couple inches of water. One of our rehabbers was able to rescue him and let him dry out. Dr. Katie examined him, and he was cleared for release. He spent a couple days with us while he cleaned up his feathers and enjoyed a few easy meals, since we didn't know how long he had been in the pool. Yesterday we returned him to his territory where his mate had been calling.

Sometimes when we release critters, we do a soft release, which means we release them in an area where we can still monitor them while they adjust to being in the wild. One of our rehabbers raised two woodpeckers from newly hatched babies. Now that they are old enough to fly and are eating on their own, they have the opportunity to come back for food if they need it. Soon we will see them less and less as they get better at finding their own bugs!

Just 11 days difference! A mama dove decided to build a nest and lay her eggs on the windshield of a new truck at Covert Chevrolet in Bastrop. Since the doves couldn't stay, one of our rehabbers picked them up and raised them from newly hatched babies on May 11th. The second picture was taken on May 22nd -- the doves have their adult feathers and are starting to pick up food their own. They will spend a week or two in a flight cage practicing flying, and then they will be released!

We love release days! Over the past week, we've released 14 opossums, 6 cottontails, and a turtle whose shell healed after she was hit by a car. Our goal is always to return animals to their native habitats when they are ready❤️

Our rehabbers have been busy! Here are just a few of our recent intakes. We've also been helping lots of callers reunite mamas and babies when possible, including screech owls, skunks, and raccoons! If you have a wild animal in an area you would prefer they were not, please give us a call. Trapping is rarely the answer and we have plenty of humane exclusion techniques to keep our wild neighbors safe!🐾❤️

🐍🏥 Snake surgery this morning! This snake got into a chicken coop and swallowed two fake eggs. Fortunately his rescuers were able to capture him and bring him to us for help. Dr. Katie performed surgery to remove the eggs, and then sutured him back up. He will spend time healing with one of our rehabbers before returning to the wild.
**If you are going to put fake eggs in your chicken coop, please make sure to nail them down or glue multiple eggs together to ensure that a snake does not mistake them for real eggs.

From hatchling to fledged in just one month! These baby woodpeckers arrived after their founder tried to reunite them with mom, but she did not return. One of our rehabbers raised them from newly hatched to release, arriving April 5th and flying away on May 2nd.
