Recently, our Mandarin classroom smelled like mooncakes and sounded like laughter.

Ms. Bao brought the Moon Festival to life for our students — not from a textbook page, but through brushes dipped in ink, stories about the harvest moon, and games passed down through generations. 🥮🏮

Ms. Bao doesn't just teach Mandarin — she builds bridges. Through her volunteer work with the Austin Chinese-American Network, she brings community members into our classrooms a few times a year to share calligraphy, food, and traditions firsthand. Our students aren't just learning a language. They're learning that culture is something you experience with your hands, not just your ears.

That's what it means to grow up at ACE — the world doesn't stay outside the classroom door. It walks right in.

Thank you, Ms. Bao, for reminding us that community is something you build one shared mooncake at a time. 🌕

Last week, our Spanish I & II Falcons stepped outside the classroom and into a real conversation — ice cream in hand, English left at the door. 🍦

Ordering a scoop in a language that isn't your own is harder than it looks. A few students admitted it on the ride home: the nerves, the search for the right word, the relief of finally being understood.

And somewhere between the sprinkles and the strawberry sorbet, something clicked: this is what so many people navigate every single day, just to be understood. That's not something you learn from a textbook — it's something you feel.

Our deepest thanks to the team at Michoacana Natural Ice Cream for meeting our Falcons with so much patience and warmth — and to Ms. Lobo and Ms. Ati for chaperoning both trips, and Ms. Chary for pulling it all together. This is what community looks like. 💛

La semana pasada, nuestros Falcons de Español I y II salieron del salón de clases y entraron en una conversación real — helado en mano, inglés fuera de la puerta. 🍦

Pedir un helado en un idioma que no es el tuyo es más difícil de lo que parece. Varios estudiantes lo admitieron en el camino de regreso: los nervios, la búsqueda de la palabra correcta, el alivio de finalmente sentirse comprendidos.

Y entre las chispas y el sorbete de fresa, algo hizo clic: así viven muchas personas, todos los días, solo para poder comunicarse. Eso no se aprende en un libro — se siente.

The best lessons don’t fit on a worksheet.

Three days. Five destinations. One very full 5th grade brain.

They handled a snake before 10am, got up close with a tortoise older than most of our grandparents, and watched a stingray glide by close enough to touch. They stood in the actual Mission Control room where “Houston, Tranquility Base here” was said out loud, and plotted a spacecraft’s real trajectory to Mars. They ran real experiments with real lab tools — and yes, pulled slime taller than they are, because curiosity needs a little chaos too.

This is what “learning beyond the classroom” actually looks like for us. Not a worksheet in sight.
