TAPIA invited to be founding member of TDI Insurance Fraud Task Force
The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) held the first meeting of the Texas Insurance Fraud Task Force on Monday. TAPIA was invited to be one of the founder associate members.
โBeing invited as an original member of the Texas Insurance Fraud Task Force, created by Governor Abbott, is a defining moment for TAPIA and for every licensed public adjuster in Texas. It tells policyholders, carriers, and lawmakers that public adjusters are part of the solution,โ comments incoming TAPIA President Ron Snouffer.
โInsurance fraud hurts everyone, and it hurts honest policyholders most of all through higher premiums and slower claims. Our members see the full picture of a loss every day, and we welcome the chance to bring that perspective to the table alongside TDI.
This invitation is a recognition of the professionalism our industry has worked hard to build, and it comes with a responsibility we take seriously. TAPIA is committed to helping protect Texans, strengthen the integrity of the claims process, and make sure every legitimate claim is paid fairly.โ
TAPIA Board appointed outgoing President, Adam Brenner, to serve on the task force.
The task force is a coordinated effort launched at Gov. Greg Abbottโs direction to clamp down on insurance fraud and better protect Texas consumers from higher costs.
Governor Abbott directed TDI in August to put consumers first and take action under existing authority to make home and auto insurance more affordable. Creation of the Insurance Fraud Task Force was one of the directed actions.
As the secondโlargest insurance market in the nation, Texas is an attractive target for increasingly sophisticated insurance fraud schemes. Last year, TDIโs Fraud Unit received more than 20,000 reports of suspected fraud.
The task force brings together 63 representatives from law enforcement, the insurance industry, consumer groups, and other partners to strengthen the stateโs response to insurance fraud.
โFraud isnโt abstract โ itโs personal,โ said Insurance Commissioner Amanda Crawford. โBehind every report is a family, a business, or a community that felt the impact. Every fraudulent claim paid raises costs for honest Texans.โ
The new task force will:
Coordinate statewide insurance fraud investigations.
Share intelligence on fraud trends and schemes.
Develop consumer guidelines to prevent fraud, especially after natural disasters.
Expand public outreach through training, webinars, and community engagement.
