Spaces of Fontana

Spaces of Fontana Spaces of Fontana is a movement collective focused on a continuous study of physical, emotional and spiritual relationships to create art rooted in hope.

Founded in 2016 by Artistic Director, Evelyn Joy Hoelscher, Spaces of Fontana is an Austin-based contemporary dance collaboration inspired by human moments to create art rooted in hope. We are dedicated to filling up every space with positive energy in hopes to leave every person touched with a sense of warmth. As artists, we explore improvisation, contemporary partnering and somatics to bring lif

e to our understanding of a human experience. Spaces of Fontana spent our first 6 years in NYC where we developed 7 works, performed over 30 times, received multiple grants and were featured in a segment with MNN TV network on a piece inspired by JPII’s Theology of the Body. We’ve had the honor to present work at various festivals and self-produced shows; including the US Open, Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theater, Dumbo Dance Festival, Arts on Site, QDF, Dixon Place and Mark Morris Dance Group Theater. We have collaborated with talented visuals artists, musicians and lighting designers to enhance our work. As a project-based company, we are committed to fostering a collaborative creative process giving space to each artist to discover their unique voice and connection to the piece. As artists we strive to “create works worthwhile and beautiful, [that] not only enrich the cultural heritage of each nation and of all humanity, but they also render an exceptional social service in favour of the common good” Pope John Paul II.

We love Austin Dance Festival 💙

What an honor to be able to share art on stage with so many talented dancers and choreographers from across the nation and continue Kathy Dunn Hamrick’s legacy. She’s the reason we are all here. She paved the path for us and she is so missed. 🌸

In January we shared an excerpt of “Becoming” at — a piece that journeys through the seasons of motherhood.

This work lives in the quiet moments:
the weight of a body leaning into another,
the push and pull of partnership,
the exhaustion, the tenderness, the becoming.

What made this performance especially meaningful was sharing the stage with live music performed by — voice and piano weaving through the movement and carrying the story forward. 🎶

The music was written in collaboration with Therese Ronco and Artistic Director, for BECOMING in 2024.

We’re so excited to bring an expanded excerpt of “Becoming” back to the stage for RE:IMAGINE — A Decade of Dance on March 27–28 at .

And yes — the music will be live again. 🎹

At Spaces of Fontana, our dancers are human first — artists, parents, partners, people — and those lived experiences shape the work we make.

Becoming is more than just a dance…its a reflection of our life. The duet portion of the work is performed by two dancing mothers, each with three kids. 🤰

✨ A decade of dance. A decade of becoming.

📣Shoutout to our favorite married dancing couple — Kanami & Connor 👩🏻‍🤝‍👨🏼

Kanami and Connor will be performing the RE:IMAGINED version of “Connected Roots”
— the very first Spaces of Fontana dance choreographed by Artistic Director . The piece was originally created just 2 months after her own wedding, nearly 10 years ago. 💍👩‍❤️‍👨

Returning to this work a decade later feels especially meaningful — and getting to set it on a dancing married couple makes it even more special. ♥️

💌A note from the choreographer:
“It’s been a true joy to revisit a piece I created as a novice choreographer and a newlywed. Reflecting on the past ten years and setting a dance inspired by my marriage on the most dynamic dancing couple I know has been such a gift. Throughout the rehearsal process we’ve shared stories and discovered so many parallels in our relationships. Kanami and Connor have a truly beautiful partnership, and it’s a highlight of this show to celebrate that marriage through movement.” -

✨ Announcing the First Recipient of The Fontana Fellowship 💛

We are thrilled to share that (in collaboration with ) is the inaugural recipient of The Fontana Fellowship — a choreographic mentorship program supporting emerging voices within Spaces of Fontana.

Through the fellowship, Matthew will create an original choreographic work under the mentorship of Artistic Director , receiving guidance, feedback, rehearsal time with Spaces of Fontana, and a choreographic stipend. This process is rooted creating space for artists to explore and refine their choreographic voice.

⭐️“I have loved performing with Spaces of Fontana because everything Evelyn does pushes me both physically and emotionally. The movement is always fun and challenging while also pushing me to really think about the story and meaning behind it.”
— Matthew Sommers

Matthew’s artistry, playfulness, and generosity in the room embody the spirit of this fellowship, and we are so pumped share the work created.
