Sugar Labs

Sugar Labs Sugar is an award-winning learning platform for collaborative learning & critical problem solving. What is Sugar?

Sugar is a Learning Platform, a computer environment composed of Activities designed to help children from 5 to 12 years old learn together, through rich-media expression. Sugar is part of a worldwide effort to provide every child with the opportunity for a quality education. It is used daily by nearly 3 million children worldwide, speaking 25 languages, in over 40 countries. Sugar provides the me

ans to help young people lead fulfilling lives through access to a quality education that is currently missed by so many. Runs on most PCs

Originally developed for the revolutionary One Laptop Per Child netbook, today Sugar runs on almost any computer, including small netbooks, older/donated PCs machines, and tablets. It is packaged for major GNU/Linux distributions, and runs on Macs using virtualization. A version which does not touch the existing hard disk installation can be used to try out the full experience using a CD or USB drive. History

Sugar was founded by Walter Bender, a technologist and researcher who works in the field of electronic publishing, media, and technology for learning. Walter is an alumnus of the MIT Media Lab, which he led as executive director between 2000 and 2006. More recently Bender served as President for Software and Content at One Laptop Per Child, where he co-ordinated the development of Sugar for the first OLPC "Children's Machine" laptop. Organization

The mission of Sugar Labs is to support the Sugar community of users and developers. It supports regional, autonomous “Sugar Local Labs” around the world, that help children “learn how to learn” by tailoring Sugar to local languages and curricula. Sugar Labs is a volunteer-driven, non-profit organization, and a member project of the Software Freedom Conservancy.
