Just as the River Shannon flows through the heart of Limerick, the Colorado River winds through the heart of Austin. This month's Irish word is abhainn, meaning river.

While downtown Austin grew around the Texas State Capitol, Limerick's historic city center expanded through the carefully planned streets of Newtown Pery. Designed in 1769, the neighborhood became one of Ireland's finest examples of Georgian urban planning. More than 250 years later, it's still a vibrant place to shop, dine, and explore, just as downtown Austin continues to serve as the heart of our city.

County Limerick is full of scenic walking trails, riverside paths, and rolling countryside waiting to be explored. It's one more thing our sister cities have in common: a love for fresh air and beautiful places.

As temperatures in Austin hit triple digits, we're daydreaming about summertime in our sister city of Limerick. Markets filled with fresh produce, afternoons along the River Shannon, and flowers in full bloom.

Though separated by an ocean and more than 900 years of history, Austin and Limerick have much more in common than you might think.

Since officially becoming Sister Cities in December 2024, our communities have continued building connections through cultural exchange, education, business, and friendship.

St. Mary's Cathedral has stood in the heart of Limerick since 1168, making it the oldest building in the city still in continuous use for its original purpose. Inside, you'll find beautifully carved Romanesque architecture, centuries-old stained glass, the original High Altar, and the only complete set of medieval misericords remaining in Ireland.

To put that into perspective, St. Mary's Cathedral had already stood for 670 years by the time the city of Austin was established in 1839.

Did you know that King John's Castle has watched over the River Shannon for more than 800 years?

Built around 1200 on the orders of King John of England, the castle stands on King's Island, where the Viking settlement that would become Limerick was established in 922 AD. Today, it remains one of the best-preserved Norman castles in Europe and one of Limerick's most iconic landmarks.

Our ALSC Irish library just received a special addition from Limerick!

A sincere thank you to Dr. Matthew Potter, Curator of Limerick Museum, for generously donating First Citizens of the Treaty City: The Mayors and Mayoralty of Limerick 1197–2007.

Written by Dr. Potter and published by Limerick City Council, the book explores more than 800 years of Limerick's civic history through the people who have served as its mayors. We're honored to include it in our growing collection and grateful for this thoughtful contribution from one of Limerick's leading historians.

Our Irish book collection is continuing to grow, and we'd love your help! If you have Irish fiction, history, children's books, cookbooks, poetry, language resources, or other books to donate, please reach out -- we'd be delighted to give them a new home.
