Video: An Immigrant's Gift

Description:
“An Immigrant’s Gift” is a documentary that aired on the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) in the United States in the mid-1990s that told the story of Joseph M. Juran and his contributions to Japan, the United States, and the world.

WoodsEnd, Inc., produced the documentary. WoodsEnd interviewed over 30 prominent leaders in industry and quality worldwide and also Dr. Juran and members of his family.

G. Howland Blackiston, grandson-in-law and co-founder of the Juran Institute, was the Executive Producer for “An Immigrant’s Gift.” Central to the project were interviews with major leaders in business and quality who discussed their relationship with Dr. Juran and often their views on management and quality. Among those interviewed were Steve Jobs, Robert Galvin, Genichi Taguchi, Takeshi Kayano, W. Edwards Deming, Arturo Onnais, Gerald Hartman, and Bob Scanlon. Additional interviews were conducted with Dr. Juran and family.

These videos were copyrighted by WoodsEnd, Inc., and through WoodsEnd are the property of G. Howland Blackiston. Mr. Blackiston has granted permission to digitize these videos and make them available for not-for-profit use. All interviewees granted permissions to use the contents from the interviews. John Butman and Jane Roessner scripted the film, which included excerpts from many of the interviews.

More background about these videos can be found at this site: http://www.johnballardphd.com/dr-juran-aig-archival-project.html

Topic:
Why Attribute Control Charts Fail and How to Make Them Work for You

Summary:
Have you seen many out-of-control signals from a p-chart and cannot find reasons for the occurrences? You are not alone!

Even though traditional attribute control charting techniques have existed for over 100 years, some critical mathematical properties of these charts can lead to organizational applications that are wasteful and harmful.

This webinar will:
Show how the mathematical properties of attribute control charting techniques can lead to firefighting common-cause variation as though it were special-cause – and how to resolve the problem.
Show how to determine if a process response is stable from a customer perspective.
For stable processes, show a report-out that includes futuristic expectations, e.g., a non-conformance rate.
Describe the need to improve a process(es) (e.g., via a Lean Six Sigma project) if a futuristic process-response statement is undesirable (e.g., non-conformance rate).
Provides and describes a free metric reporting app that offers many advantages over traditional attribute control charting methodologies, including no firefighting common-cause variation as though it were special-cause.
Describe a methodology where an organization can report automatically updated predictive performance metrics throughout its business.

Location:
Virtual

Cost / RUs:
This webinar is free to attend.

Topic:
Leading with Morality and Virtue in Problem-Solving

Description:
Overview: Quality professionals frequently interact with multiple stakeholders, switching between leadership and followship roles. In team problem-solving, leader interactions are based upon knowledge of personality profiles, emotional intelligence, human factors, and ethical values. While these approaches are useful, they are often insufficient in problem-solving settings. Behaviors unfold that may be toxic, result in stagnation, discouragement, and sometimes generate withdrawal of well-meaning problem solvers. Insights realized from research in Business Ethics and Global Leadership reveal leadership must draw upon moral principles. This presentation shows how the moral dimension impacts leadership and how quality leaders may better prepare for these encounters through developing virtues.
