We’re proud to welcome Char Hu, PhD, as the new Board President of Alzheimer’s Texas.

A longtime member of the Alzheimer’s Texas Board, Char previously served as president from 2023–2024. His personal experience caring for his grandmother, PoPo, inspired his commitment to supporting older adults and their families, and he has spent more than 15 years advancing innovation in aging and long-term care.

As Board President, Char will continue helping advance Alzheimer’s Texas’ work to support individuals living with dementia and their caregivers while advocating for progress in dementia research and prevention.

We’re grateful for Char’s continued leadership and look forward to the work ahead.

A little friendly competition, a lot of community spirit, and 11 four-legged contestants made Westminster annual Dog Show Fundraiser a special afternoon. 🐾

Held on August 21, the resident-only event brought Westminster residents, family members and their dogs together to support Alzheimer’s Texas. Congratulations to Westminster resident Linda and her dog, Trixie, on taking home the Best in Show title!

Westminster has raised more than $2 million for Alzheimer’s Texas over the years through events like this, helping support education, resources and care for individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

We are grateful to Westminster for its longstanding partnership and to Heritage Title, this year’s title sponsor, for supporting this special event in support of Alzheimer’s Texas.

Texas has taken a significant step toward advancing the future of brain health through the Dementia Prevention and Research Institute of Texas, or DPRIT.

Created through legislation and a voter-approved investment, DPRIT is designed to support research, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care for Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and related neurodegenerative disorders.

This investment represents an important opportunity to strengthen dementia research, support scientific discovery and improve outcomes for individuals and families across Texas.

Alzheimer’s Texas and The DKR Fund have been leading voices in Alzheimer’s awareness and advocacy throughout the last five Texas legislative sessions. While DPRIT’s implementation and funding remain subject to ongoing legal proceedings, we remain committed to advancing awareness, advocacy and research that can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

Sleep is an important area of ongoing Alzheimer’s research, and new findings are helping scientists better understand its relationship to brain health.

Researchers at UT Health San Antonio examined sleep duration and blood levels of p-tau181, a protein associated with Alzheimer’s-related changes. In a study of 2,410 participants, longer sleep durations were associated with higher levels of p-tau181, with the strongest increases observed among those reporting more than 10 hours of sleep per night.

The findings add to research exploring the connection between sleep and Alzheimer’s disease. However, the study does not establish that long sleep causes Alzheimer’s, and further research is needed to understand the relationship.

Alzheimer’s Texas and The DKR Fund is committed to sharing research and education that help individuals, families and caregivers stay informed about Alzheimer’s disease and the ongoing work to better understand it.

Research continues to play an important role in advancing our understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. 🧠

A new research center at UT Southwestern Medical Center is working to advance Alzheimer’s research in North Texas. The North Texas Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center is one of only two Alzheimer’s Disease Research Centers in Texas and will bring together researchers and clinicians focused on areas including risk factors, biomarkers, clinical trials and potential new treatments.

The Center is also building opportunities for community engagement, education and training, helping strengthen Alzheimer’s research across the state.

As research continues to move forward, Alzheimer’s Texas remains committed to supporting efforts that advance knowledge and improve the lives of individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

Research continues to expand our understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and the importance of early detection.

A recent study from Texas A&M University explored changes in cognitive flexibility, or the brain’s ability to adapt, switch between tasks and learn new information, in a mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease. The findings may help researchers better understand the earliest changes associated with the disease and inform future studies.

While additional research in humans is needed, studies like this highlight the value of ongoing scientific research and the progress being made toward improving our understanding of Alzheimer’s disease.

At Alzheimer’s Texas, we remain committed to supporting education, raising awareness and sharing research that brings resourceful knowledge to individuals and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease.
