These anti-tank obstacles were constructed at Devils Tower National Monument to discourage potential invasion by the region’s Prairie Dogs. Just kidding - but we do get some questions about these striking objects. During the earliest years of park operations, the Belle Fourche River which runs through the park could pose a significant obstacle to visitors. Rainfall in the region would incur flooding in the river that could leave tourists either trapped inside the monument or unable to enter. In the late 1920’s infrastructure improvements to mitigate this challenge included the construction of a new bridge at the entrance of the park and a rechanneling of the Belle Fourche River. These concrete tetrahedrons ensured that the Belle Fourche wouldn’t flow back along its original path. With the Belle Fourche having since been tamed by the Keyhole Dam, the tetrahedrons are just leftovers of a different age in our park’s history.

My turnaround rules, written down before I ever leave the trailhead:

1. I set a turnaround time the night before, when I am thinking clearly, not on the summit push when I want it badly.

2. Weather overrides everything: building cumulus by mid morning, a first rumble of thunder, graupel bouncing off my hood, or storms on the horizon all turn me around.

3. Pace check: if I am not where I planned to be by my checkpoint time, and I know I'm not on pace to meet my turnaround time, the summit moves to another day.

4. Body check: When I notice stumbling feet, a headache that will not quit, or a partner who has gone quiet, I usually call it a day before something goes wrong.

5. The golden rule to respect: the summit is optional. Getting home is not.

Risk management is not fear. It is what lets me keep coming back year after year.

Some really well started horses come out of this program…if you’re looking for a new mount…this ma be your change to have a legend.

Meet London! London—a name with a little style and a lot of potential.

London (Tag 6882) is a 3-year-old gray mare standing 14 hands with a solid start and plenty of room to grow. Riding-started and ready to keep progressing, she’s a great prospect for someone looking to build a partnership. From the Salt Wells Creek Herd Management Area, she’s ready for her next chapter.
