How do you prepare for your appointment with SARC? πŸ€”

The only thing you need to bring is yourself and, if under 18 years old, a legal guardian, but it might also help to bring a loved one to support you or a comfort item to make the appointment easier. πŸ«‚

Before you come to see us, think about what healing might look like for you, as this is different for everyone. You don't have to decide right away, but know that you have options to choose from for your next steps. β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή

Try not to eat, drink, wipe, do**he, shower, or wash clothes until after the appointment, but it's okay if you already have. This helps to prevent damage to any DNA, but we don't want you to deprive yourself of needs like food, water, and using the restroom. Evidence can still be collected. 🧬

You can call our 24/7 crisis line if you or someone you know are in need of services after a sexual assault: 706-774-5200

Giving and receiving consent is about more than a simple "yes" or "no." Affirmative consent is like sharing an order of 🍟 FRIES.

⛓️‍πŸ’₯ Freely-given without force, pressure, or coercion. πŸ—£οΈ "I want to share these fries with you, but it's okay if you don't want any."

↩️ Reversible at any moment, no matter how "far" you have gone. πŸ—£οΈ "I thought I wanted fries, but I don't want them anymore."

🧠 Informed about risks like STIs or pregnancy. πŸ—£οΈ "I don't want to get food poisoning from these fries, so let's check the health inspection score first."

πŸ‘ Enthusiastic; if there is hesitation, talk it out first. πŸ—£οΈ "I'll wait to order us fries if you need some time to think about it."

🎯 Specific about what activities the consent covers. πŸ—£οΈ "I really want steak fries with ketchup, not curly fries with mayo."

If you suspect that you or someone you know has experienced sexual assault, you can receive 24/7 confidential support through our crisis line or look to our website for more information.

πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ Happy Pride Month! πŸ³οΈβ€βš§οΈ

Common concerns from survivors of sexual assault include shame, guilt, and worry that their experience had something to do with their personal identity or expression. πŸ’”

It is important to remember that perpetrators of sexual assault are looking to feel in control or to humiliate others. They may also use manipulation, coercion, threats, or physical force on victims.

You are in control of your own life, and no one else can change your sexual orientation, masculinity, femininity, or ability to have healthy relationships. 🫢 Even if you experience arousal or another reaction during an assault, this is a natural biological response that does not impact who YOU are, and it is also NOT a sign of consent.

Members of the LGBTQIA+ community are more likely to experience assault and abuse. SARC is a safe space to receive care without the fear of discrimination from our team, no matter a survivor's identity or background. ❀️

Tabernacle Baptist Church ✝ has a long history of supporting the well-being of the Greater Augusta community, including SARC, survivors, and our partner agencies. πŸ’œ

SARC was grateful for the opportunity to provide an informational table at their Kingdom Living Mental Health & Wellness Fair to spread awareness and serve the community. The speakers were insightful and encouraging, and they advocated for building stability and resilience. 😌

SARC is not religiously affiliated and provides services to survivors of all beliefs and backgrounds, but it is also a beautiful thing to work with faith-based organizations that bring hope, compassion, and generous care to those in need, just like TBC Augusta. 🀲

If you are in need of services or are interested in having SARC attend your event, give a presentation, or provide informational material, please look at our website for more information at 🌐 www.sarcgeorgia.org.

Simply knowing how people live with trauma on a day-to-day basis can be enough of a motivator for some people to raise up positivity and healing. 🌿 One such person is this month's man who supports SARC, who makes every move guided by empathy for others, including survivors of assault and abuse. β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή

MAY: Keith Walton

Serving as the Sherwood Campus Pastor ✝ for Journey Community Church, Keith Walton is a man who cares for the spiritual, emotional, and mental well-being of all members of the community, no matter their background. He also serves on SARC's Board of Directors to be a part of building a program where survivors feel safe, understood, and cared for at any point on their path to healing.

As a strong leader with an empathetic heart and a determined mind, Keith Walton always wants the best for SARC and for survivors. Among the many other men who make an impact in the community, we are grateful to have him in our fight against sexual violence. πŸ’ͺ

πŸŽ— Mental Health Awareness Month in May is a good time to check in on your loved ones. πŸ«‚

Those who have experienced trauma such as sexual assault, intimate partner violence, child abuse, and other situations are more likely to experience:

🌧️ Depression
πŸ“ˆ Anxiety
πŸ˜₯ PTSD
🚬 Substance abuse
πŸ’” Suicidal ideation
πŸ₯ Short-term and long-term health issues

Assault and abuse can impact a survivor's personal relationships, their performance at work or school, and their self-image. Everyone's healing journey is a little different, and it is okay that one person may take a little longer to work through their feelings than someone else. Be patient with yourself and with your loved ones.

If you are in need of help working through your sexual assault trauma, SARC offers free counseling to survivors in our area. Let us know if you are interested in a support group, as well.

Today is a day to celebrate the memory of those lost in service of protecting life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for citizens of our nation. πŸ’ Memorial Day πŸ’ is not only for remembering, mourning, and thanking service members for their sacrifice but also for finding ways to prevent future tragedy.

The unfortunate truth is that active duty military are more likely to die by su***de than any other manner of death. This can be from many different causes, but PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) may be the most harmful of them all. ⛑️

Although PTSD can be related to combat or direct military service, it is also related to other traumatic experiences like sexual assault, harassment, and abuse. Military sexual trauma (MST) is known to affect tens of thousands of service members every year.

For our active duty and veteran neighbors and friends who may be struggling, you can find help at some of the resources below:
