McDUFFIE REMAINS UNDER STATE OF EMERGENCY FOR WINTER STORM FERN
Thomson, GA — The City of Thomson and McDuffie County is still under a State of Emergency and Curfew for the hours of 8pm to 7am (nights only) for the time period of Saturday January 24, 2026 until 7am Tuesday January 27, 2026. Law enforcement clarifies that in addition to work and medical related travel, school travel is exempt.
McDuffie County is still under an Ice Storm Warning until 1pm Monday. Temperatures are well below freezing so any precipitation that falls will freeze on already cold surfaces. We can expect icing through the night and with periods of heavy rain. Roads and bridges may become slick tonight once temperatures drop below freezing. Please travel only when necessary and take cold weather precautions. GDOT has treated (brined) state routes. While brining may help lessen the ice accumulation, this measure does not fully make roads safer during icy conditions. McDuffie and Thomson will be treating problem areas and bridges as well.
Emergency officials met this morning at 9:00 am. All county and city resources are prepared to respond to weather and other related emergencies. Road crews will continue to monitor areas and address them as needed. Other emergency resources are prepared to activate if necessary. GA Power continues to stage resources in Thomson and has reported no widespread outages currently.
McDuffie County BOE has closed schools for Monday, January 26, 2026. Big Hart and Raysville Campgrounds will remain closed. Thomson-McDuffie Government Center will be closed on Monday, January 26, 2026. State offices in the county will also be closed on Monday. There will be no recreation games January 24th or January 26th. No Open Gym (Pickleball/Basketball) on Monday, January 26 due to the gym being reserved as a potential warming center. School and County officials will make determinations later regarding delayed openings for Tuesday, January 27, 2026.
