When most people hear the word "helpline," they picture a very specific, intense scenario. They think it’s only for the absolute worst moments—the immediate aftermath of a trauma, or a middle-of-the-night emergency.

And while the Maine Sexual Assault Helpline is absolutely a 24/7 crisis line, the truth is, we are so much more than that. You don’t have to be in the middle of a crisis to reach out to us.

We’re here for the messy, quiet, confusing days, too. We’re here for the moments when you’re just trying to figure out what comes next.

Here is what the helpline actually is, and why you might want to call us:

"I just need resources." — Navigating healing can feel overwhelming. If you are looking for local mental health resources, support groups, legal advocacy, or medical options, we’ve got you. We can help you find exactly what you need in your part of Maine.

"Someone I love told me they were hurt, and I don't know what to do." — Supporting a survivor is a heavy responsibility, and it’s okay if you feel unequipped. If a friend, partner, or child disclosed to you and you’re staring at the wall wondering “What do I say next? How do I help them?”—call us. We can guide you through how to be a safe harbor for them.

"Their story brought up my own stuff." — This happens so much more than people realize. Secondary trauma is incredibly real. If someone trusted you with their story, and it unexpectedly unlocked a memory, triggered a past experience, or just left you feeling deeply anxious or heavy, you deserve support, too. We are here to help you unpack that.

"I just have questions." — You don’t need to have a whole story ready to tell. Maybe you’re unsure if what you experienced counts as assault. Maybe you want to know how the reporting process works before making a decision. Whatever your questions are, big or small, we will answer them with zero pressure and zero judgment.

We want to demystify what happens when you reach out. On the other end of the line is just a human being. A real, empathetic person who is ready to listen, validate you, and help you figure out your next step—even if that step is just taking a deep breath.

Whoever you are, and whatever you’re carrying today: we’re here for that. You don’t have to figure it out alone. Help happens here.

This Pride Month, SAPARS stands in proud, fierce solidarity with the LGBTQAI+ community. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Pride is a beautiful celebration of authenticity, resilience, and love. But true solidarity means looking at the whole picture—including the realities that are painful to discuss. Today, we need to talk about an issue that deeply impacts the q***r and trans community: the disproportionate reality of sexual violence.

National data consistently shows that LGBTQAI+ individuals experience sexual assault and intimate partner violence at significantly higher rates than cisgender, heterosexual individuals.

This isn't a reflection of the community itself; it is a direct result of systemic barriers. Higher rates of violence are fueled by:
Systemic Stigma & Discrimination: Homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia create environments where perpetrators feel they can exploit vulnerabilities.
Fear of Reporting: Many survivors hesitate to seek help out of a justified fear of being misunderstood, misgendered, or blamed by institutional systems.
Isolation: A lack of affirming spaces can make it incredibly difficult for a survivor to reach out to friends, family, or mainstream resources.

At SAPARS, we believe that every survivor deserves an advocate who sees, respects, and affirms their whole identity.

Healing cannot happen in a space where you have to hide who you are. That is why our services—from our 24-hour helpline and hospital accompaniment to legal advocacy and support groups—are intentionally designed to be inclusive, trauma-informed, and identity-affirming. We do not judge, we do not assume, and we do not police your identity. We listen. We believe you.

To the LGBTQAI+ survivors in our community: Your experiences are valid. Your pain matters. And you do not have to navigate the aftermath of trauma alone. We are here for you this month, and every single day of the year.

If you or someone you care about needs a safe space to talk, process, or find resources, please reach out. Our services are entirely free and confidential.

🩵 MEET THE TEAM: JESS BOULAY 🩵
Meet Jess, our incredible SART Advocate for Franklin County! For the last year and a half, Jess has been a vital part of the SAPARS team, bringing immense heart and dedication to supporting survivors.

Want to get to know Jess? Here is a quick look behind the scenes:

✨ The Work & "The Why"
"We as advocates are always here for you—whether it's our 24/7 helpline, drop-ins, or court accompaniment. You never have to go through it alone. Walking alongside folks during their healing journey is an absolute privilege. This work is important because the folks reaching out, carrying this alone, or not ready to reach out yet ARE important, deserving, and they matter."

🌲 Maine Life & Human Stuff

Go-to way to decompress: Sitting in her hammock swing on her front porch.

Commute soundtrack: Early 2000s dance-pop/hip-hop or late 80s/early 90s country.

Favorite Maine Treasure: Smalls Falls.

Favorite Maine Food: Gifford's Campfire S'mores Ice Cream.

🍟 The Fun Stuff

If she weren't at work: "Sitting on the couch, eating snacks as a meal, and sharing with my 4 dogs."

I-95 Survival Kit: Andy Capp's Hot Fries and a Monster Energy.

Drink of choice: Dr. Pepper.

A hill she'll die on: "Doggy kisses and butt wiggles can help solve anything!" 🐾

We are so lucky to have Jess holding safe spaces for survivors in our community. Help us show her some love in the comments! 👇
