AFTER THE FOX HUNT, all but three gathered at Little Italy Pizza for some pizza and fun chatter. The Auburn University Amateur Radio Club has been very active this spring and will even host a field day event in June. The Fox Hunt today included not one but THREE fox finds and each was found by a different team. Using their skills that were taught in a short session before the hunt, the teams set out around campus to find the Fox. It was clearly a competitive race as the teams made record time and found the first two foxes within thirty minutes as they RAN to beat the other teams to GZ. Surely many students wondered what was going on as they saw teams of several students with radios and tape measure antennas running to beat the other team. Maybe on the next Fox Hunt, you can join the fun. The AUARC hosts a fox hunt toward the end of each term and several other events during the term. The next objective is to reactivate the APRS gateway and install a remote FT8 for all the members to use in the radio room.

Don't know what a fox hunt is? No worries, you are about to learn about tracking down a hidden transmitter. This is the same method used to find missing persons, determine problems with routers and leaky cables, locating malicious transmitters and jammers, and more. Not to mention it is a lot of fun.

You sit in front of a small, black box. The swishing sounds of static fill the air as I slowly turn the dial – listening . . . searching. Suddenly, a voice breaks through the white noise: “This is Kilo Charlie Four Alpha Alpha Alpha looking for contacts.” This is not just any voice. You reach for the microphone and respond with your callsign: “KC4AAA, this is Kilo Mike Four Sierra India India. Over!” Time slows as you wait for a response. Finally, the voice replies: “KM4SII, fine copy! My name is Jack, currently stationed at the South Pole Research Station in Antarctica.”

Have you ever wanted to communicate anywhere across the globe without using any existing infrastructure? How about send a text message or image directly over the air? What about locate a hidden radio transmitter in a game of hide-and-go-seek with radio waves? Or even talk to astronauts on the International Space Station?

All of these and so much more are activities that you can engage in with Amateur Radio. No matter your interests or your major, there is something in amateur radio for you!

If you are already an amateur radio operator or simply want to learn more about this exciting hobby, I encourage you to attend the Auburn University Amateur Radio Club’s upcoming meeting. Anyone and everyone is welcome!

When? – Tuesday, February 15th at 5:00 PM Where? – Broun 125

Hello everyone!

Where: Broun Hall room 125
When: Start at 5:00 PM and then we are going out in groups with antennas on the search.
Who: Licensed or Unlicensed are all welcome EVERYONE!
Why: Have fun doing a hide and seek, learn about fox hunting and radio, and have lots of fun. Oh and someone is going to WIN!

There will be a fox hunt on campus between 5 and 6 this evening starting from Broun Hall 125. Everyone can participate and you will learn a lot while having fun. To the winners go the glory. Unfamiliar with a fox hunt? Read below:

Today we’re on a fox hunt for a hidden transmitter. It’s just like the ‘Amazing Race’ but instead of getting clues, we are using radio direction finding techniques to search for the transmitter hidden somewhere on campus.

Fox Hunting Tips
Finding hidden transmitters can be a great sport but searching out and finding radio signals can be a useful training activity for clubs and emergency communications groups. Your transmitter finding skills can be put to use in search and rescue if the lost person has a beacon of some sort, or finding malicious interference that may be plaguing a repeater. Radio direction finding skills can even be used for non-malicious interference like a transmitter inadvertently causing interference or a leaky cable television tap.

Fox hunting can be fun and exciting activity. You don’t even need a license to search for a fox, so unlicensed individuals can take part in the fun, so come out this evening and join the fun.
