A compelling new mural titled "Taking Up Space" stands as a tribute to the intellect, bravery, and community-building power of local immigrant women. Created by the acclaimed local 🎨 artist duo Germán Acosta and Amanda Auble, the mural offers an evocative narrative on human connection, belonging, and thriving in a new 🖼️ landscape.

The mural depicts four women gathered together on the Atlantic City beach over a ♟️ chessboard. The figures are modeled after real-life Atlantic City community members—artists, poets, teachers, and 📸 photographers who contribute to the city's creative and cultural life.

"In our first mural, we used a boat to depict the journey to a new country," shares artist Amanda Auble. "With 'Taking Up Space', we ask: What is life like after arrival? Chess represents the careful planning and strategy required to thrive in a new landscape, while the act of playing in a public space honors the close-knit community found in Chelsea’s neighborhoods."

48 Blocks Festival: Right on Time! ⌛️ One day. One place. A celebration of Atlantic City’s creative spirit—featuring live music, art demos, exhibiting vendors, food, activities, and stories from all 48 blocks.

More than 100 friends, neighbors and community members gathered Friday at Atlantic City’s Uptown Park for a rideout, honoring 7-year-old Pleasantville second-grader Jayden Barger, who died after being struck by ⤵️ Find a link to the story in the comments.

🕊️ In Loving Memory of Jayden Barger 🕊️

Amid all this positivity, we also have tragic news we need to share: there was a young boy with us all day at the festival named Jayden. He frequents the Uptown Skatepark—on Sunday he was hit by a car while riding his bike at the corner of Melrose and Massachusetts Avenues and he passed away. Our hearts are broken and we grieve as a community with his family. 💔

It's been hard to process how we could share and experience so much joy and then have such tragic sorrow happen so soon after.

Please be safe 🙏 and take care of yourselves.

There is a memorial ride out on Friday evening, services and celebration of life on Sunday, and a GoFundMe to support his family financially as they navigate life after this devastating loss.

If you are interested in participating in advocacy and action for street safety in Atlantic City, we are collecting contact information. As next steps become clear to promote safer streets in our city, we will share information on how to get involved.
