About Camp Abilities North GA
Camp Abilities is a unique summer camp experience for children who are blind or visually impaired. Across the world, these exceptional children have the opportunity to learn how to play and participate in various adaptive sports as they receive one-on-one instruction from counselors. As they learn the rules of the games, the campers also gain skills in self-advocacy. This ensures that they will be able to continue participating in the sports that they learn to love at Camp Abilities when they return home.
Dr. Lauren Lieberman, the founder of Camp Abilities, saw her vision of inclusion come to life when she started the first camp in 1996 in New York.Today, there are over twenty-eight camps around the globe. Katie Proctor, the founder of Camp Abilities North Georgia, shares this same mission in which children who are blind or visually impaired should not be excluded but should be given the opportunity to excel and advocate for themselves. A 2019 recipient of The Lions of Georgia’s Anne Sullivan award for her devotion to the blind and low-vision community, Katie is the lead vision teacher for the Cherokee County School District. She is also the founder of the club, Blind Believers. The motto of this club, “I can do anything you can do, just in a different way”, perfectly explains what Camp Abilities North Georgia strives to do, which is to provide blind or visually impaired children with a safe, fun environment to learn the adaptations needed to participate in sports like their sighted peers back home.
Campers will have the opportunity to play sports such as beep baseball, beep kickball, and tennis! They will get the chance to try various water sports, yoga, and horseback riding while making life-long friends and having a lot of fun along the way. The camp began in July of 2018 and lasts three days. This year, the camp will be held on July 21-24, 2020. Thanks to our generous volunteer staff and donors, campers are only required to pay a small $50 placeholder deposit. This deposit can either be returned at the end of camp or can be donated to the Camp Abilities organization. Please visit our website for more information on how to volunteer, donate, or sign up a camper. We hope to see you in July!
