Hi Friends!

It's been a whirlwind these last few months at Georgia Adoption Specialists! We've neglected our social media for far too long and have not been keeping up with posting our usual announcements!

We are excited to catch up and will be sharing one to two updates each week so you can see all of the wonderful things that have been happening.🩷💙💕🩵

To start this off, a very warm welcome to the world, Fitz! Fitz was born in September and welcomed by two very excited & grateful dads, John Patrick Loughney and Chris. ☀️

Fitz, you are deeply loved by both of your families, who are now connected forever through their shared love for you. This was a truly beautiful match, mama K created a birth & hospital plan where every detail was honored & respected. K, you are incredible & I know Fitz will grow to cherish & respect you all the days of his life. ⚓️

At Georgia Adoption Specialists, we are dedicated to providing ongoing support to both families as they begin their post-placement journey. 🌈

We believe that healing and growth are fostered through compassion, support, empathy, clear communication, and the fulfillment of promises.🫶🏽

Mother’s Day weekend is so complicated, beautiful & painful. The Saturday before Mother’s Day is Birth Mother’s Day. Unless you’re an adoptive parent or birth mom you’ve probably never heard of this special day.💐

Before we joyously celebrate Mother’s Day tomorrow, we pause today to honor another sacred day, Birth Mother’s Day. This is a day which brings both joy & heartache, and it’s important to me to honor both.🙏🏽

So today I honor you. Those of you who trusted me to walk beside you during your adoption journey, undoubtedly the most painful part of motherhood, I carry you in my heart. Always. You carried your baby for 9 months, you gave birth & life to that very loved & wanted baby….all the while knowing in a matter of a days, you would be crushing your own heart & soul into a million pieces by sayjng goodbye. Then you left the hospital with empty arms, an empty stomach, and a broken heart.💔

I see you, I honor your sacrifice, your story, your life, and your heart. You matter, more than words can express. You gave life, you will always be your baby’s first mama & never forgotten.🌷

"Adoption is a beautiful, messy thing where joy and loss exist side by side. Our joy -- the birth of our adoptive daughter Nora -- was one of the best days of our lives. But as our family was made complete, another mother grieved.

Nora’s birth mother, Mama K, made the bravest, most selfless decision when she chose adoption. I was in awe of her strength during Nora's birth and the days that followed. She gave us the most special gift and for that, my husband and I will forever be grateful. We always hoped for an open adoption, and we are so glad that Mama K wants the same. She is very much part of our lives from afar; we text, facetime and share photos, and she hopes to visit Nora for her first birthday in April.

While it’s true that Nora’s adoption story is a complicated blend of joy and loss, it is rooted in one thing...LOVE. And we're so thankful that Nora will grow up knowing just how much both her adoptive parents and her birth mama love her."

Reshared from a previous NAAM:

"We could not be more excited to be celebrating as new parents. This little miracle happened to us when we least expected. She is the light of our lives, and we could not be more grateful for the painful experiences we lived through on our journey to her. Our pain taught us to be patient, to trust the process, and to never assume anything.

And her selfless, kindhearted, gentle, loving birth mom. There are just not enough words and there is certainly not enough time to express how much we love and respect her. She gave us the greatest gift we could have ever received. She has gifted us with the immense responsibility of loving and parenting her baby, and for that, we are eternally grateful. Open adoption is such a gift, and we are so blessed to be a part of this forever family."

"Adopting our amazing son, Griffin, in 2021 at infancy changed us in more ways than we ever imagined. The biggest revelation is that fatherhood has taught us to live in the here and now, to treasure the family we’ve cultivated, and to hold each other tightly through hardships, hope, health scares, happiness, and everything in between.

In a deeply divided America that, much to our shock and disappointment, officially entered us on Nov. 5 into an era once again of national othering, a reduction of human rights, name-calling, and fear-based leadership, we know that our family’s bond, love, and purpose isn’t any politician’s play toy. It is real, it is strong, and it is very, very American. We often say: if others feel our family is in some way wrong, harmful to our child, or that we being “us” infringes on their own right to love and parent, a visit to our chaotic kitchen one morning before preschool would paint a picture of humor, love, structure, trust, and deep care for the privilege of being a family. We are not, in fact, very different at all from the vast majority of families. We know love will get us through another tough era. We know our family’s mere presence won’t change every mind or heart, but by living our truth, we hope to be a reminder that family can be what you make it. And we’ll continue working daily to give our adopted son a fortified life of bravery, love, kindness, resilience, independence, and optimism.

Happy Adoption Awareness Month, y’all. If anyone is considering adoption, we learned a ton, are still learning each day, and are more than willing to chat."

November is National Adoption Awareness Month. While many celebrate, it’s also a time to raise awareness. Adoption is complicated. It’s born of crisis and heartbreaking, life-altering decisions.

Every birth mother says goodbye to her precious baby just days, sometimes hours after saying hello. Most of us cannot even imagine what it feels like to say goodbye to a baby you’ve lovingly carried and nurtured to life for 9 months. These mothers place all of their trust and hope into a family they barely know. This is the biggest leap of faith of their lives. Women who place children for adoption don’t leave the hospital and magically forget. They don’t fully heal; rather they learn to grow around the break in their heart.

We also need to recognize that adoptees have no voice in this matter until they’re much older. Even then, they’re often told (often by well-meaning, yet ill-educated loved ones) how they should feel grateful, lucky, special, chosen. But what if they feel sad and lonely and uncertain of their place in this world? These are very real feelings and it’s time to bring this awareness to the forefront.

During this National Adoption Awareness Month, let’s elevate adoptee and birth mother voices. We will be sharing those voices here in this space. Our one ask is that we don’t jump in to say, “not all” feel this way. We know that. But studies are showing this to be true for many in the adoption space. We want this to be a safe space of reflection and education. We hope you’ll lean in and listen, learn, and follow along.

(Please note: The mom in this picture not only gave us permission to share this photo, but she encouraged us to use it. We would *never* betray someone's trust on something so intimate without their express approval.)

⭐November is National Adoption Awareness Month!⭐

NAAM started as "Adoption Week" in 1976, became a national event in 1984, and became a month-long event in 1995!

The primary motivation for this month is spreading awareness. It is a month to encourage others to learn about adoption, to elevate the voices of those involved in adoption, and to acknowledge the people in this country whose lives have been impacted by adoption.

This month we will be sharing more of our favorite adoption related websites, books, and other resources. ❤🌈
