Scholar Spotlight: Harrison

Harrison’s experience in Barbados has been all about noticing the differences, asking questions, and paying attention to how things work outside of what he is used to back home.

From visiting schools to experiencing the culture firsthand, he has had the chance to compare, reflect, and form his own perspective on what he is seeing.
That is one of the most important parts of this trip. Our scholars are not just being shown new places. They are being challenged to think about what they see, what they learn, and what they may want to bring back to their own communities.

Harrison has his own take on the experience, and we want you to hear it directly from him.

Scholar Spotlight: Tanner

Global citizenship looks different when you get to experience it for yourself.

Tanner has spent this week learning, exploring, asking questions, and seeing firsthand how life, education, and culture in Barbados compare to what he knows back home. Those moments matter because exposure changes perspective, and perspective can change what a young person believes is possible.

This trip is about more than visiting another country. It is about giving our scholars experiences they can carry with them long after they return home.

Hear Tanner share what has stood out to him so far, then keep following the journey as we highlight more of our scholars and the lessons they are bringing back with them.

Global Citizenship goes to college.

Our scholars had the opportunity to visit the University of the West Indies in Barbados and get a firsthand look at higher education from a global perspective.

The visit gave them a chance to learn about college life, academics, leadership, culture, and the role universities play in shaping communities across the Caribbean. Experiences like this help our scholars see that their future is bigger than one city, one state, or even one country.

That is the heart of global citizenship: expanding perspective, creating exposure, and helping young people imagine what is possible for themselves.
The journey is still going.

Fall break… and somehow they still ended up back in class.

While in Barbados, our scholars had the opportunity to visit a local school and learn firsthand how education there compares to what they experience back home in the United States.

From classroom structure and curriculum to student expectations and the overall school environment, the visit gave them a chance to ask questions, make comparisons, and see how young people in another country learn and prepare for their futures.

That is what makes this experience so valuable. Global citizenship is not just about seeing new places. It is about understanding how people live, learn, lead, and build community in different parts of the world.

And yes, we know… they probably thought Fall Break meant no school.

Follow the journey as our scholars continue learning beyond the classroom and experiencing Barbados in a way they will never forget.

FOLLOW US 80 FEET BELOW THE SURFACE!

Learning doesn’t always happen in a classroom.

As part of our Global Citizenship experience in Barbados, our mentees had the opportunity to explore Harrison’s Cave, where they got an up-close look at the island’s natural history, limestone formations, underground streams, and the geological processes that shaped this incredible cave system.

It was a chance to connect science, geography, culture, and history to something they could actually see and experience for themselves.

And there was a fun connection to something many of them may recognize. Barbados served as a major filming location for Season 3 of Netflix’s Outer Banks, and Harrison’s Cave has been reported as one of the locations used for portions of the cave sequences. At 100 Black Men of DeKalb County, sports are about much more than learning how to win a game.

Through 100 Kings, young athletes are learning discipline, accountability, teamwork, leadership, resilience, and how to show up with confidence both on and off the field. Every practice, every challenge, and every competition becomes an opportunity to teach lessons they can carry into the classroom, their careers, their families, and their communities.

We want our young men to recognize that their value extends far beyond how fast they can run, how many points they can score, or what they can accomplish athletically. Their talent may open doors, but their character, choices, work ethic, and leadership will determine what they do once those doors open.

Whether they become professional athletes, entrepreneurs, engineers, educators, coaches, executives, or community leaders, the goal is to prepare them to succeed in life.

Because the goal isn’t simply to win games. The goal is to win at life.
