RESTLESSNESS

That night the king could not sleep; so he ordered the book of the chronicles, the record of his reign, to be brought in and read to him.

ESTHER 6:1 NIV

Everyone, at times, deals with a restless spirit. There are many reasons for this, but one is because we’re doing things our own way rather than aligning with God’s will.

Esther 6 is a beautiful example of this. King Ahasuerus had been unwittingly deceived into signing an edict for the destruction of the Jews. Subsequently, the king could not sleep because of a restless spirit. So he called for the chronicles to be read, and through them discovered an error that ultimately led to the salvation of the Jewish people.

Friend, has God made you restless? You can’t put a finger on it; you don’t know why the agitation is there—but you have an uneasiness in your heart that won’t go away?

Do not be surprised—the Father is actively seeking your attention. When such a time comes, the wise thing to do is to stop and ask the Lord what He is trying to say.

Lord, when my spirit is restless, remind me to seek You. I want to know Your will and how You desire me to proceed, amen.

In His presence . . . respond to restlessness with obedience.”

TRUE PEACE

Gideon built an altar . . . and named it The LORD is Peace.

JUDGES 6:24

It’s not in the appeasement of evil, ungodly compromise, or by engaging in the false security the world offers that you’ll ever find true and lasting peace. You will only do so by obeying God.

Gideon understood this firsthand. Judges 21:25 says, “In those days . . . everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” This did not bring anyone tranquility. On the contrary, the Israelites’ idolatrous ways invited continual assaults by surrounding armies. So God called upon Gideon to obey Him and to stand against the invaders.

Being from the smallest, weakest tribe, Gideon felt unprepared for the challenge. Wouldn’t it be easier just to get along with the oppressing Midianites?

The Lord’s answer? “Surely I will be with you” (Judges 6:16). Yes, Gideon’s righteous stand would stir up the enemy, but God would be his abiding peace and lead him to triumph.

The same is true for you. Obeying the Lord may not be easy or popular, but you can have peace no other way. So stand firm in Him and trust that He will be your place of rest.

Lord, lead me—I will obey You. I praise You for being my peace, amen.

In His presence . . . find true and lasting peace.

LED TO THE SOURCE

“Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

ISAIAH 6:8 NIV

Have you ever found that when reading your Bible or listening to a sermon, sometimes God will lead you to the same passage over and over again?

I recall an occasion when I was seeking the Lord’s will about a decision I faced, and every morning I found myself reading Isaiah 6. I was into the third week of this before I realized I was being rebellious toward the Lord with regard to what He required of me. Somehow He would not let me escape verse 8. When I finally said yes to the Lord, Isaiah 6 was no longer prominent in my morning meditation.

One of the most rewarding experiences in the Christian life is to face a challenge and meditate upon Scripture until we know our heavenly Father has spoken. Through His Word He directs us, challenges us, warns us, and reassures us.

Will you be open to what He is saying to you today? Then be sure to pay attention to the verses that keep turning up.

Father, thank You for Your Word and Your persistence with me as I seek to hear Your voice and follow Your lead, amen.

In His presence . . . let Him lead you.

WHOLEHEARTEDLY

“You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.”

JEREMIAH 29:13

Do not get frustrated or discouraged when it appears difficult to seek the Father. You may wonder why He doesn’t just make Himself known to you. But don’t despair, He is training you to find Him. How does He do so?

First God develops your trust by stretching you beyond your comfort level. Romans 8:24–25 explains, “Hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it.” And so the Father remains silent for a time so you’ll persist in seeking Him and increase in faith.

Second, the Lord teaches you to depend upon Him rather than any earthly crutch. He sustains everything in the universe with His power and He wants you to realize it. So He brings you to the point where you must rely upon Him for everything—even the timing and manner by which He reveals Himself to you.

So keep watching, and expect to hear your loving God. He will certainly be found by you as you seek Him wholeheartedly.

Lord, thank You for deepening my relationship with You. I give You my whole heart, amen.

In His presence . . . wholeheartedly seek His face.

EAGLE-LIKE FOCUS

Those who wait for the LORD Will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles.

ISAIAH 40:31

Seeking and obeying God can be difficult, especially in a world that is often adversarial to believers. So when you’re tired of the battles and just want some peace, what do you do? Do you give in? Compromise? Or do you find your strength in your Creator?

Scripture is clear—if you want to soar, you must take your eyes off of what everyone else is doing and focus on the Father.

The eagle is the perfect example. When fish come into view, eagles train their sights on their targets with amazing intensity. Regardless of wind currents or weather, they sweep in with power and precision—their mighty talons successfully gathering their prize.

In a sense, this is your goal as a believer—to set your full focus on God. He gives you the strength, precision, and perseverance so you can continue flying and receive your reward (1 Corinthians 9:27).

So when you’re weary, remember to train your sights on the Father. With Him, the victory is always in view.

Lord, I wait on You. Give me Your energy, strength, and focus so I can continue to obey You, amen.

In His presence . . . gain strength to persevere.

THANKFUL ALWAYS

I will give thanks to the LORD with all my heart.

PSALM 9:1

If you desire to have deep and lasting joy, it’s important for you to develop an attitude of appreciation. You must decide to see the good in situations and choose to be thankful regardless of what goes wrong.

So begin right now by counting your blessings. Think about what it cost Jesus to have a relationship with you. Be grateful for the amazing forgiveness He’s given—pardoning your sins past, present, and future.

Meditate on your wonderful God, who would never leave or forsake you, but loves, protects, and provides for you always. Consider the Holy Spirit, your Advocate in all that concerns you. He empowers you to serve successfully and gives you all you need for life and godliness.

Finally, consider the wonderful plans God has for you and all the loved ones He’s given you to share your life with.

Friend, you have so much to be grateful for. Surely the Lord is worthy of your praise. So worship God and give Him thanks in every situation. Because you’re a child of God and truly, “praise is becoming to the upright” (Psalm 33:1).

Lord, I am so grateful for You! Thank You for loving me and making me Your own, amen.

In His presence . . . give thanks and praise Him.

TRUSTING IN THE SILENCE

“If you believe, you will see the glory of God.”

JOHN 11:40

When you are desperate for help and direction, God’s silence can feel disheartening. You wonder if He has forgotten you or if He really cares at all.

Certainly, as Martha and Mary waited for their dear friend Jesus to respond to their pleas, they grew increasingly desperate. Their brother, Lazarus, was dying and they knew Jesus could easily heal him. If Jesus would just respond in time, surely Lazarus would be okay. But Jesus tarried. And Lazarus died.

However, do not think the delay was because Jesus didn’t love them. He did. Rather, when He finally arrived, He used the opportunity to glorify the Father and deepen their faith by raising Lazarus from the dead (John 11:1–45).

Likewise, God’s silence to you is not to dishearten you but to bring you to a new level of intimacy with Him. So do not despair and do not sin. Keep seeking Him passionately, knowing He will answer you. And He will reward your intense desire for His will with a greater revelation of His character than you’ve ever known.

Jesus, I will trust even when You are silent. I want Your will more than anything, amen.

In His presence . . . believe He will answer you powerfully.

Part two of my study after studying Luke

“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
