Shirley Chisholm was a staunch proponent of the Equal Rights Amendment. In her 1970 speech on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives, she argued that ratification of the ERA was necessary to “clarify countless ambiguities and inconsistencies in our legal system.”

To come into effect, the constitutional amendment would need to be formally published or certified by the national archivist, who has declined to do so in the past. What happens now is unclear.
