Mitochondria are behind everything — energy, hormones, cognition, aging, resilience, and why so many women begin feeling disconnected from their health in midlife.

This Women’s Health Month, Dr. Taz MD, pioneer in integrative medicine and founder of Hol+ joined Nathalie Niddam, longevity expert and host of The Longevity Podcast, for a conversation on cellular health, mitochondrial function, and the science shaping the future of women’s health.

We are grateful for leaders like Dr. Taz and Nathalie helping bring mitochondrial science into the mainstream conversation and for their support of Countdown and the research we are accelerating in this new era of health. Podcast link below:

The science of aging is advancing fast, and most women haven't heard any of it.

Anastasia Khodzhaeva, co-founder and co-CEO of
Young Goose, is one of the people changing that. As a biologist and entrepreneur building skincare around the hallmarks of aging, she knows exactly where the gap is, why it matters, and how to combine scientific rigor with entrepreneurial vision.

This Women's Health Month, Anastasia Khodzhaeva sat down with us to talk about mitochondrial health, postpartum skin, perimenopause, and what most women experience as inevitable is actually addressable at the cellular level.

Funding mitochondrial science isn't a luxury or a biohacking trend, it's the most foundational investment in how we feel, function, and age. This is exactly why Countdown exists: to lead the next era of health.

The next time you take a breath, feel your heart beat, or notice your thoughts, consider what’s fueling it all: your mitochondria.

Every function in the body depends on cellular energy, powered by the trillions of mitochondria inside you.

At Countdown, we are leading a new era of health — one focused not only on symptoms and disease, but on the energy that powers human life itself.

Join Countdown, fund the acceleration of mitochondrial science and medicine to impact human health.

We’re excited to announce our first research grant of 2026 awarded to Dr. Elias Adriaenssens at the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology in Vienna, Austria. This is research that will change how we treat Parkinson's, rare & chronic disease, neurodegeneration, and ageing, at the cellular level where it all begins.

This grant builds on the promise hypoxia has shown in preclinical research and the recent work by Dr. Adriaenssens on a mitochondrial repair system that acts downstream of hypoxia. His work is charting a path toward treatments that selectively activate that repair process, potentially mimicking the benefits of hypoxia without the challenges of prolonged low-oxygen treatment.

At Countdown, we fund the shared biology beneath diseases that most organizations address in isolation. Every grant we make is chosen for its potential to reach across conditions — accelerating discoveries that don't stay in a lab, but move into clinical settings for you, your families, and the millions of people whose lives will be changed by this research.

Three years ago today, our founder started with a belief: Energy is everything.

That cellular energy is the foundation of how we age, function, heal, and thrive. And by accelerating mitochondrial research, uniting the field, and creating greater public awareness, we could change the future of health.

Since then, we've raised over $3M, funded 5 groundbreaking research projects, and are growing a community as passionate about this science, and the future, as we are.

Today, we're stepping into our next chapter with a bold new name that matches the impact of this science.

Meet Countdown.

We're proud of where we've been and we're even more excited about where we're going.

Join the Countdown. Fund the future.
