Yesterday was a sad day for our farm as we said goodbye to 29 year old Chief; one of our Hero Horses.

For 12 months we struggled with him retaining weight. Lots of vet appointments, lots of good groceries and supplements and none of that resulted in adding weight. So before he had to struggle through another winter we decided to give his old body and arthritic joints a rest.

Chief came to us as Justin, short for Just In Time a retired race horse who managed to stay in the Money for his first two years in racing when he just decided to stop. He was then acquired by a serious equestrian for use in competition and although he did give it a shot his former owner, Tanja Lorenz Berry could feel he just didn't have the heart for it and was feeling some discomfort.

For the most of his life he stayed with Tanja as a well loved and pampered pasture mate to the other horses on the farm. In 2021 Tanja reached out to the Horse Owners of Georgia to try to find another home for Chief. His pasture mates had pasted away and he had been alone for the two years. Tanja's father was interested in selling his farm. So she knew it was time to find another situation for him.

Trek for Hero Causes, Inc. went and got the old boy to be a Trek Horse and after two months of settling in he got to work with his first Hero. His temperament was awesome and his tall stature is appealing to many of the men that come to the farm. He had working relationships with 9 firefighters with two break through moments, 7 police officers with three break through moments and 4 military winning a life long love from one Hero who was also a volunteer at the farm.

Chief proved to everyone who came in contact with him that even the oldest horse can provide comfort and service to humans. Chief leaves behind his best friend Opha Mae a Trek Horse on the farm who has stayed near his grave since we sent him off.

Now and forever Chief will be known as a Trek Hero Horse and honored accordingly.

Run free my dear friend and thank you Chief!

It is with a heavy heart that I must announce that Trek for Hero Causes, Inc. will be giving up our non-profit status effective December 31, 2024.

It has been a struggle to fund the operation and has cost the founder all the money they make at their farm business to continue it's operation.
Fund raising has been impossible since Covid hit and the now dire economic climate.

Our total donations to Trek for Hero Causes, Inc. since inception has been less than $3,000. It costs us on average of $21,000 per year. We pay no salaries. We started in 2018.

Although it is sad we did accomplish much. Below is our final report.

We traveled over 950 miles to spread the word about the value of horses in the treatment of PTSD and TBI.

We rode 350 miles to spread the word which generated the desire of local communities to make horses available to their firest responders and veterans to work the Trek for Hero Causes self healing program.

We assisted in starting Self Healing stables, finding locations and training for the 11 to benefit our heroes throughout Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia.

At the Bartow County, Taylorsville GA Hero Barn which is our headquarters we served the following numbers of heroes:

52 Police officers
75 Firefighters
42 Veterans

Of these 169 heroes was can report 44 who state they no longer have any issues with PTSD. 37 who established effective coping skills that allow them to work, attend all their children's activites and travel into crowds when necessary handling anything that starts to trigger them quickly and immediately without missing a beat.

One hard case who even found it difficult to get through the training process stopped coming and was lost. A constant reminder that not everyone makes it.

20 are still working with horses located closer to their homes and have reported good news each time we check in.

We would like to thank our board members, volunteers and and committee experts for their service to the non-profit.

Please note. Trek for Hero Causes, Inc as a non-profit may be going but Steele Away Acres the family farm of the Steeles and home of the none profit and it's founders for all these years will always be available for our heroes. We will never turn a hero in need away. Here are some photos of our many visitors and volunteers and our wonderfully Hero horses and Hero dogs.

Thank you and God Bless America!

It is time again for the "ask". Yes we need your help.

We have a short term goal we need to reach. We are attempting to raise $1675 to get us through the winter with feed and hay for the horses to cover these upcoming winter months.

We are also looking for $ 450 to cover new business cards and printed materials for the non- profit as we have several speaking engagements and two veterans organizations that we will be visiting to talk about the healing power of horses.

So help us reach our $2125 dollar goal for Christmas this year.

We need three horses that can be saddled to serve as honor horses (riderless horse) to honor all our deceased Heros in Memorial Day for 1 Hour. We also need people to hold flags (7).

The horses will stand for 10 minutes and then walk in a circle two times changing direction the second time around and then stand again. We will do this for 1 hour. It will be video taped and shared in sever different sights and pages as well as photos included in a press release with all the horses names. Handlers and flag people must dress in black, brown or Navy. No bright colors or crazy hats.

Anyone else wishing to deck their horses out as honor horses can contact Peg at Trek for Hero Causes to borrow boots and uniform pieces as well as signage and you cam do this same thing in the front of your home or business. Feel free to DM this page.

This past Saturday we honored two of our Trek horses by making them Hero Horses. Our last Hero Horse was Zena from Trinity Rescue. This time we honor Chief and Geronimo.

Last year Tanja reached out to the Horse Owners of Georgia to try to find another home for Chief. His pasture mates has pasted away and he was alone for the last two years. Tanja's father was interested in selling his farm. So she knew it was time to find another situation for him.

Trek for Hero Causes, Inc. went and got the old boy to be a Trek Horse and after two months of settling in he got to work with his first Hero. His temperament is awesome and his tall stature is appealing to many of the men that come to the farm. He has had working relationships with 8 firefighters with one break through moment, 5 police officers with one break through moment and three military winning a life long love from one Hero who is also a volunteer at the farm.

Because of his age and extensive arthritis, we can't predict just how long we will have this wonder horse with us and didn't want to waist a minute making sure the world knows the value that even the oldest horse can bring to society.

Now and forever Chief will be known as a Trek Hero Horse and honored accordingly. Thank you Tanja and Thank you Chief!

Geronimo is a Paintaloosa that was adopted from Trinity Rescue by John Steele. John is the Co-Founder of Trek for Hero Causes, Inc. Geronimo was a back yard horse at a crack house. One of two horses. Since his condition was not as bad as the other horse Trinity Rescue was unable to get the horse awarded to them by the courts. Strangely enough the owners contacted Trinity a few days later offering to sell the horse to them because they needed bail money. To date Geronimo was the only horse purchased by Trinity Rescue and we are thankful they did.

Geronimo is a horse trained for long distance daily riding for our Trek 2020 Searching for Our Heroes Campaign which came to a screaming halt due to Covid 19. It was then that we opened the Hero Barn at Steele away Acres so our Heroes could participate in a self healing program for PTSD.

Geronimo is very popular with our Heroes. He is not the one we pick for a newcomer but always ends up being the horse that every hero wants to end up with. Geronimo has s***k. He will test, but quickly falls back into line as soon as he knows you have a clue what you are doing. Yes....he is that horse.

Geronimo has made many public appearances. Is one of the main faces of our organization and will do anything we ask of him.

Geronimo has served 7 police officers with one break through moment, 5 firefighters with one break through moment and four military with two break through moments. He carries one black bead for the one hero he was exposed to that took his life by su***de. That bead serves as a reminder that not everyone makes it to the other side of PTSD.

Geronimo is our original Trek horse and now he is our Hero. Thank you Geronimo for all that you do for our Heroes.

A Hero horse can be any horse that serves mankind above and beyond recreation. To nominate a Hero Horse contact us through messenger and we will provide you with the required information.

On Saturday we honored a boarding guest of ours by making her a Hero Dog. Cassie is a sweet, personable K-9 that we at Steele Away Acres has had the pleasure of taking care of for the many years. She is one of those dogs that I can have out when people come to the farm because she is so easy going.

One day we had a Hero working at the barn on her PTSD issues which she had struggled with for 15 years. She had tried everything. Counselling, group, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Cognitive Therapy & Prolonged Exposure as well as EMDR. And yet she just felt like she wasn't getting anywhere.

Note, that after our Heroes have travelled that long road to recovery they know the lingo and science as well as the doctors who treat them.

So she turned to the Hero Barn which is a self healing tool that utilizes a horses ability to mirror a persons emotional state 100% thereby giving the individual with the horse a view of their current emotional state. This gives the Hero an opportunity to address it immediately and recover from the stressful moment, anxieties and fears. The Heroes goal is to protect the horse. That means if you see the horse is scared you must calm it and the only way to do that is to calm yourself.

To do this they tell the horse their story in as much detail as they can. These Heroes are prepared for this by teaching them horsemanship skills. That means they can safety handle a horse and its many unpredictability's and they know horse body language better than most horse owners. That is what we do....the rest of the healing is between the hero and the horse as we are not doctors and give no advise or counselling. We speak about the horse.

Anyway....on this one day our Hero was here working with Geronimo. She left the barn having put the horse back into the pasture looking frustrated and upset to find Cassie laying outside the barn office in the sun. The Hero plopped herself down on the ground and proceeded to pet her and speak to her about her frustrations.

"Hi Girl. I just can't do this anymore. I quit. This is ridiculous. I just can't get through my story." said the Hero.

Cassie who had been sitting up getting pets and cuddles proceeded to lay back down and looked away from the Hero.

"What!...bad idea? Don't get all pissy with me. You don't have to approve dog." she said as Cassie turned her head still down and glanced at her momentarily.

The Hero continued to try to justify her giving up to the dog. Cassie didn't act all that amused as the Hero told me.

Then the Hero said that something happened that almost made her believe the dog understood what was going on. Cassie placed her paw on the Heroes leg who was seated on the ground next to her. Cassie continued to look away.

The Hero said it was as if she was saying "Lady, I can't help you, but I feel for you. Don't give up, it makes me sad."

The Hero then said to Cassie "I know, I know. I need to put on my big girl panties and get back to work. I know I can do this." Cassie then sat up and moved close into the hero resting her head on her shoulder and stealing some licks, tail wagging and then she bounced around in a circle.

The Hero said to Cassie "Yes!!, Yes.....OK, lets do it.!"

The Hero then walked back into the barn and snatched up our mini Mule. Yes Justice is one stubborn creature and if you can get him to go around the arena without putting on the breaks it is a miracle.

At this point having over heard part of the conversation between Cassie and the Hero, and watching the Hero march back into the barn I got up from my chair to watch.

I almost said something about her selection of the mule but kept quiet. She proceeded to halter him, pet him for a few minutes and then she walked slowly around the arena whispering her story to him. I watched as she appeared to be getting a little emotional and the Mule confirmed it firmly. He put on the breaks and backed away very quickly. I picked up a crop just incase I needed to rescue her from a possible kicking session.

The Hero dropped to her knees with one arm stretched out in the direction of the Mule holding only about two inches of that lead tightly in her hand. She cried, she prayed and she kept breathing and as she got quieter Justice the Mule stopped pulling and within just a few minutes slowly made his way back to the Hero as she stood up, pet him and she walked around the arena two more times and left the barn with a huge smile.

I don't normally ask much when the Heroes come but on this day I did ask if she was alright and she said "I am Awesome and I owe it to silly dog Cassie. It was almost like she disapproved on my quittin' attitude and then confirmed I finally made a good decision when I decided to go back in and continue the work. She did it." the Hero said as she pointed at the Cassie.

So Cassie is being honored for her impact on this Hero and many wonderful greetings and hugs she gets and gives to the Heroes that visit our barn. We love you Cassie, you couldn't be a better dog.

Please note this entire story was shared with the permission of the Hero and it was she that walked to a photo of another Hero dog in the barn and said "Cassie is also a Hero." We agree.
