The Undergraduate Health Sciences Academy (UHSA) recently celebrated a major milestone — 10 years of preparing students for careers in medicine and the health sciences.

During the 10th Anniversary Graduation Celebration, Morehouse School of Medicine honored the newest UHSA graduates while reflecting on a decade of achievement, growth and opportunity. Since its founding, the program has helped students strengthen their academic skills, connect with mentors, gain valuable healthcare exposure and pursue their dreams of becoming future healthcare professionals.

The success of UHSA is made possible through the dedication of faculty, staff, mentors, donors and community partners who continue to invest in the next generation of healthcare leaders.

Morehouse School of Medicine mourns the passing of Eva “Ginger” Sullivan, JD, wife of our founding President and Dean, Dr. Louis W. Sullivan.

Mrs. Sullivan served as First Lady of Morehouse School of Medicine during pivotal years in our institution’s history and helped strengthen our foundation through dedicated service and leadership. In 1976, she founded The Friends of Morehouse School of Medicine, Inc., leading efforts that supported student scholarships and expanded opportunities for future healthcare leaders.

A distinguished attorney and advocate for public health, civil rights and the arts, Mrs. Sullivan devoted her life to uplifting others and advancing causes that improved communities. Her impact on Morehouse School of Medicine and countless lives will be remembered with deep gratitude.

We extend our sincere condolences to Dr. Sullivan, their family and all who were touched by her remarkable life and legacy.

When Morcquess Oliphant reflects on her path to medicine, she sees a journey defined by leadership, service and a commitment to expanding healthcare access.

A current MD/MBA student at Morehouse School of Medicine and Georgia Tech, Morcquess recently earned a place in the 2026-2027 ElevateMeD Scholars Program cohort. The national program supports aspiring physicians through scholarships, mentorship, leadership development and professional growth opportunities.

Her journey began on the soccer field as a student-athlete at the University of Missouri, but it was volunteering in clinics serving resource-limited rural communities that helped solidify her calling to medicine. Those experiences showed her the impact that access to care and representation can have on individuals and families.

At MSM, Morcquess found a community that matched her values. Through opportunities like the Health Equity for All Lives (H.E.A.L.) Clinic and other service-focused initiatives, she has continued to grow as a future physician leader while keeping healthcare access optimization at the center of her work.

One lesson remains especially important to her: “You can’t be what you can’t see.”

As she prepares to pursue a career in obstetrics and gynecology, Morcquess is committed to using what she learns to support others along the way. As she shared, “What we learn, we have a duty to lift up others behind us and empower people.”

Designed to provide early exposure and mentorship for high school students interested in healthcare careers, the Surgery REACH Program equips participants with the knowledge, skills and confidence to begin exploring pathways into medicine and the health professions.

Throughout the program, students engaged in hands-on learning experiences, mentorship opportunities, healthcare career discussions and skills training that offered a firsthand look at the many possibilities within the field.

As we celebrate this year’s graduates, we are reminded of the importance of investing in the next generation of healthcare leaders. We are proud of all they have accomplished and excited to see where their journeys lead next.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, Morehouse School of Medicine’s National Center for Primary Care and Tri-Cities High School unveiled Strength in Voices, a powerful youth-informed mural created through the Black Youth Mental Health (BYMH) Project.

Created alongside students from the Free Your Feels Club and community muralist Charity Hamidullah, the mural reflects healing, resilience, creativity and the importance of uplifting youth voices.

The unveiling celebrated the impact of the three-year BYMH project, which brought together youth, researchers, educators, and community partners to advance Black youth mental health through peer-led engagement, advocacy and policy innovation.

The project engaged more than 300 youth across Georgia and demonstrated how authentic youth-adult partnership can create safer, more supportive spaces for conversations around mental health and wellbeing.

Thank you to the students, partners, educators and community members who helped make this meaningful project possible.

Morehouse School of Medicine was honored to be part of the CARE PACKAGE® Salon hosted by CARE and Beauty Forward founder Isan Elba in Atlanta, a gathering focused on advancing Black maternal health and supporting women and families through community partnership and advocacy.

As highlighted in Essence Communications Inc. MSM President and CEO Valerie Montgomery Rice, MD, FACOG, opened the event with remarks on the importance of addressing maternal health inequities and ensuring better outcomes for Black mothers nationwide, while Natalie D. Hernandez-Green, PhD, MPH, founding executive director of MSM’s Center for Maternal Health Equity, joined a fireside-style discussion focused on maternal health inequities, community-centered solutions and improving outcomes for Black mothers.

Guests also assembled thoughtfully curated CARE Packages for women enrolled in CARE’s Maternal Health Program and the birth workers who support them.

We are proud to stand alongside organizations and advocates working to create a more equitable future in healthcare.
