Witt came to swim. He worked so hard to face an conquer that fear. As you you can see, the fear has left the building. He was so proud and so was I. Way to go Witt!

Swim meets are a world upon themselves. They can be stressful, fun and a wild roller coaster ride. If we step back and let our swimmers take over, meets can be a place for them to be responsible.

SWIMFACT
MYTH
When I smell the strong odor of pool chemicals, it means the swimming pool water is very clean. *

FACT
The heavy chemical odor is not from chlorine. It means that unhealthy chloramines have formed in the water, created from the mix of chlorine and contaminants. Chloramines are not as effective in disinfecting swimming pool water. A well-maintained pool has little odor.

- Not many people are aware that swimming and fitness go hand in hand. A lot of us focus our energy on land type exercise not really knowledgeable of the great effects of water fitness and the amount of calories that can be burned from not only swimming laps, but running or playing in the pool. So I’m going to share with you guys today how many calories are burned while being in the pool, no matter what activity you choose. As a rule of thumb you can gauge the calories you burn below. And of course, the more you weigh the more calories you will burn doing each of these activities:

*Note* The first # represents 15mins of doing that activity; the second # represents 60mins smile emoticon

(It's a lengthy read, but well worth knowing for the safety of you and your loved ones)

- DRY AND SECONDARY DROWNING: PREVENTION, SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENT

Like most parents during swim season, you probably figure once your child is done swimming the risk of drowning is over-unfortunately it's not. It is a FACT "dry" and "secondary" drowning can occur up to 1 hr to 24 hrs after the swimming is done. The good new is there are steps you can take to prevent and recognize symptoms to keep your child safe.

Like I stated before, there are two types of drowning that could happen AFTER you get out of the water. It can happen to adults too, but it's more common in kids because of the small size.

With dry drowning, water never reaches the lungs. Instead, breathing in water causes your child's vocal chords to spasm and close up after he's already left the pool, ocean, or lake. That shuts off his airways, making it hard to breathe.

Secondary drowning happens a little bit differently. Your child's airways open up, letting water into his lungs where it builds up, causing a condition called pulmonary edema. The end result is the same

Here are some steps to help you recognize the symptoms:

1. Monitor the person’s breathing. Difficulty breathing, painful breathing or shallow breathing are all red flags that may indicate a person is at risk for a dry drowning episode. Count the number of respirations for 15 seconds and multiply by 4. Over 20 respirations per minute could be a red flag for dry drowning.

2. Check for persistent cough, pain in chest and mood or mental status change. Lethargy or increased agitation when lying flat, sweaty skin or color changes such as pale, or blue/grayish color are signs of poorly oxygenated blood. Remember, children can not compensate for very long like adults. They tend to β€œcrash” quickly once these signs are present, so act quickly.

3. Dry drowning usually occurs within 1 hour and 24 hours after incident.
* If it is caught early, dry drowning can be treated.
* Treatment involves supplying oxygen to the lungs.
* Call 911 or take the child or person immediately to the emergency room if there are signs or symptoms indicating risk of a dry drowning episode.
