Thank you to everyone who joined us for last week’s Barrow County Family Connection Collaborative Meeting!

It was a great way to kick off the new school year and reconnect with so many of the people and organizations working together to support children and families across our community.

We especially appreciated the presentation from Barrow County Education System social workers Stephanie Byrd and Jennifer Benford on the school system’s attendance policy and the important role attendance plays in student success.

Thank you to all of the organizations represented, and a special thank you to Hope Iglehart from Senator Jon Ossoff’s office for joining us and spending time with our collaborative partners.

We’re grateful for everyone who continues to show up, share resources, build relationships, and strengthen the work happening throughout Barrow County.

📅 Join us for our next Collaborative Meeting:
September 30 | 12:00–1:30 PM

We hope to see you there!

This month, we partnered with UGA Extension Barrow County, Department of Community Supervision, and REFORM to host a Poverty Simulation, followed by a Reentry Simulation at The Wimberly Center for Community Development.

If you’ve never had the opportunity to participate in one of these events, it is truly a unique, immersive, perspective-shifting experience.

Participants stepped into simulated real-life circumstances and were challenged to navigate the kinds of barriers many individuals and families in our community face every day — balancing limited resources, accessing services, meeting basic needs, and making difficult decisions under pressure.

The Reentry Simulation offered another important perspective, walking participants through some of the challenges individuals may encounter as they work to successfully reenter the community after incarceration.

Experiences like these create space for greater understanding, meaningful conversation, and stronger collaboration across the organizations and individuals serving our community.

Thank you to all of our participants, volunteers, and nonprofit partners who made the day so meaningful! A special thank you to Barrow County Commissioner Rolando Alvarez (District 3), Dr. Karan Soni with Northeast Georgia Health System Psychiatry Residency Program, NGHS Barrow, , Bridge Barrow, and the many other organizations represented.

📅 Save the tentative date: March 2027!
We’re already looking ahead to hosting another simulation experience and hope to see even more of our community represented.
