We began our Rivers out of Eden theme at the start of Scripture, in the garden where four rivers flowed from the source of life itself. And here, near the very end of Scripture, the river appears again.

The river that began in Eden doesn't end there. It flows all the way through Scripture and into eternity. And it will never run dry.

For those who have poured themselves out in ministry and kingdom work, who have carried the weight of serving others in hard and demanding places, this passage is a profound reminder. The work you do is not in vain. The river you carry to others flows from a source that is eternal and inexhaustible. And one day every nation, every tribe, every people you have loved and served will stand in the fullness of what that river was always moving toward.

The river is still flowing.

This month's book recommendation is one that is quite pertinent to our current season of hosting retreats at CV. In her book Invitation to Retreat, Ruth Haley Barton shares practical guidance from her personal experience of leading hundreds of retreats for others. She makes the case for retreat as a key practice that opens us to God.

Ruth writes, “Many of us have no idea how addicted we are to human striving, hard work, and performance-oriented drivenness until we actually stop. This may be one of the most shocking realities we face while on retreat: There is a direct correlation between the discomfort we feel when we cease our relentless human striving and our addiction to activity and achievement as a way of staving off feelings of inner emptiness. In fact, we could almost predict that those who are most uncomfortable with the non-activity of retreat are probably most addicted to activity as a way of avoiding inner emptiness and shoring up their sense of self with external accomplishments. To say no to our compulsive doing is uncomfortable in the short term, but relinquishment is the invitation.”

In this book, we are invited us to consider the idea that retreat is not a luxury, but rather a necessity of the spiritual life. For those in ministry, for the senders and supporters, for our teams who serve at CV retreats, or for anyone looking to invest in their friendship with Christ, this book will help you to better understand both the importance of retreat, but also some insight into why we highly value the idea of retreat (individual, small or large gathering, etc).

What if your day was structured around God rather than your to-do list? That's the invitation of our next practice in the Back to the Source series — Fixed Hour Prayer.

Fixed Hour Prayer is one of the oldest spiritual practices in the Christian tradition, rooted in the rhythms of the Psalms and practiced by believers for centuries. At its heart it is simply this: setting intentional moments throughout the day to refocus the heart and mind on the Lord. As Jeremy and Monica Chambers describe in The Art of Missional Spirituality, the goal is to specifically structure the flow of our days around rhythmic and anticipated connection with the Lord.

Not just a morning quiet time and an evening wind down. But a day punctuated by returning, again and again, to the One who holds it all together.

This practice breathes life into the words of 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18: "Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." Praying continually isn't about never stopping what you're doing. It's about never losing the thread of connection with God throughout the ordinary moments of your day.

For all of us, as we navigate full, unpredictable, and demanding days, this practice offers something quietly revolutionary. It reorients the day not around what needs to get done, but around who we belong to.

We loved serving our partners in Asia Minor! Throughout the week we got to engage in activities for adults and kids. We waded into our stories, sharing about grief and lamenting before the Lord.

Our kids team provided space for laughter, fun and creativity. As they raced down the water slides and built homemade binoculars, our team got to chat about Who Loves Them and Why.

We love getting to serve our partners in this part of the world, and encourage you to pray alongside us for their perseverance, hope and endurance!

This year, we want to keep the needs of our partners around the globe at the forefront so you can join us in supporting them through prayer. Today, we're focusing on our faithful partners serving across the Middle East.

The Middle East is a region where the cost of following Jesus can be extraordinarily high. Christian converts often face persecution from their families, tribes, and communities. Many governments in the region restrict open evangelism, making every act of witness an act of courage. Yet God is at work through partners and local believers who remain faithful, sharing the Gospel and planting churches in the face of real opposition.

Please join us in prayer for:
- Those boldly sharing the Gospel in places where it is unwelcome and even dangerous
- Christian converts who face persecution from those closest to them — that they would be protected, strengthened, and surrounded by community
- Wisdom and safety for believers witnessing and planting churches in restrictive environments

Celebration is woven into who we are at CV — so as we enter our 10th year, we're marking this season with ten moments that tell the story of God's faithfulness over this past decade.

Our sixth moment focuses on one of our favorite services that we offer: retreats. In 2022, we hosted our very first in person retreat — the Romania Respite Retreat — and something shifted. Watching workers gather, exhale, and encounter God in a dedicated space confirmed what we had always believed: this kind of intentional and restorative care changes people.

And so we kept going.

Since that first retreat in Romania, we have hosted gatherings in Mexico, Asia Minor, Peru, USA and Asia, and returned to Romania three more times through 2023, 2024, and 2025. Each location, each group of workers, each week together has been its own story of God's provision and faithfulness.

These retreats are not just events on a calendar. They are sacred spaces where weary workers are seen, heard, and renewed. Where marriages are strengthened, children and teens are cared for with intention, and people leave with a little more capacity to keep going.

A few weeks ago we had the joy of walking alongside a family navigating a significant season of transition and discernment after serving in Southeast Asia. Over three days together, they had space to tell their stories, process what they carried, and reflect on what God has been doing in and through them.

It was a full and meaningful time, and the children were provided with intentional debriefing activities as well.

Those engaging in cross-cultural work carry things that deserve to be processed, honored, and held with care. Seasons of transition especially can benefit from a dedicated space to pause before moving into what comes next.
