Chokma!
Our Chickasaw celebration was a great success 🙂
All through November, the Primary children explored the history and living culture of the Chickasaw Nation. Our study culminated with our celebration on Friday, where the children got to participate in keeping the Chickasaw culture alive! Getting to engage hands-on with all they've been learning, the children tied corn husk dolls, made stomp dance shakers, painted gourds, glued beads in a geometric pattern inspired by beaded collars, and joined together for the stomp dance in a Chickasaw Friendship Circle with classmates and families.
The children made Three Sisters Stew in class, and Grow families cooked up additional traditional Chickasaw recipes. The children enthusiastically enjoyed a shared meal of the stew, pashofa, grape dumplings, molasses bread, and of course the famous fry bread!
We are grateful to the many parents who helped make this event so rich and immersive. Your support created a truly impactful cultural experience for the children.
A special thank you goes to our Chickasaw family for so eagerly offering to share their heritage with us. Without your guidance, hosting such a full and authentic event would not have been possible! Thank you for contributing not only your knowledge and pride, but your time and talents: lending traditional cultural items, presenting traditional Chickasaw stories and art, and leading us in the Friendship Circle dance. You really made our first celebration of a Southeastern Indigenous nation so connected and meaningful.
Chokma'shki to everyone involved. We are deeply grateful for your support in helping our students grow as citizens of the world!
