Long post warning…
Today was a beautifully hard day.
Yesterday, we had the honor of meeting a kind and resilient 18-year-old young man. A wonderful Gwinnett County Police Officer encouraged him to come see us — and thankfully, he did.
As we talked, he shared that when he turned 18 about three weeks ago, he was put out of his home. Since then, he had been sleeping behind buildings, doing his best to stay safe.
Yesterday, we were able to provide a shower, food, clothing, and most importantly — a listening ear. We promised him we would do everything we could to help find housing.
Today, alongside Gwinnett County One Stop for Help, we spent HOURS making calls, searching, advocating, and refusing to give up.
Then during our conversation today, he quietly shared something heartbreaking:
Tomorrow was supposed to be his graduation.
He was supposed to walk.
But because graduation practice had already happened earlier in the day, he simply said he was “okay without walking.”
We weren’t.
As only God can orchestrate, a graduation cake had been donated to us today.
So after closing, we celebrated him.
His hard work. His perseverance. His strength. His future.
Countless phone calls later, we secured a safe placement for the weekend and a program placement beginning Monday.
As we waited for his Uber, our staff and volunteers gathered money for him and signed his graduation card.
He left with a big smile and a promise to keep in touch.
Tonight, if you are reading this, please pray for our friend.
Pray that God protects him and guides every step ahead.
Pray for healing in his relationship with his mom.
Pray for his younger siblings.
Pray for our community.
A special thank you to Gwinnett County Police Department for your kindness.
Thank you to Briana with Gwinnett County One Stop for Help — you went above and beyond today.
Thank you to the programs in Atlanta, stepping in to help (we’ll share more when we have permission).
And thank you to our AMAZING staff and volunteers who dropped everything today to celebrate, care for, advocate for, and love our friend well.
This is why we do what we do.
