Interesting piece of trivia: the oceans contain more than 340 quintillion gallons of water. The earth weighs 6 sextillion metric tons. The known universe stretches more than 30 billion light years (200 sextillion miles). That same universe contains at least 100 billion galaxies, each made up of approximately 100 billion stars. True or not, I'm not sure. Interesting but does it really matter?

What really matters is that children battle cancer and too many die.

From the Nation Cancer Institute web site: Although cancer in children is rare, it is the leading cause of death by disease past infancy among children in the United States. In 2017, it is estimated that 15,270 children and adolescents ages 0 to 19 years will be diagnosed with cancer and 1,790 will die of the disease in the United States (1). Among children ages 0 to 14 years, it is estimated that 10,270 will be diagnosed with cancer and 1,190 will die of the disease in 2017.

Will you help me help families that have children battling cancer? Specifically, families with Children at Alabama Children's Hospital. Soccer For A Cure and University of Alabama Birmingham Men's Soccer program will be hosting our 11th UAB Soccer For A Cure Classic for children at Alabama Children's Aug 31 - Sept 2 - 2018. More to follow about this event.

The 9th annual UAB Soccer For A Cure Classic will take place at the new UAB Soccer Field in Birmingham, AL with men's games on Friday 9/9/2016 and Sunday 9/11/2016. The objective of this event is to raise awareness of the issues that families of children with long term illness deal with each day and to raise donations for Alabama Children's Hospital.

Participating teams: University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of Tulsa, Stetson University and University of Rhode Island.

Each year coaches and two players from each team will tour the cancer and blood disorder wing of the hospital. This years tour will be on Saturday 9/10. These photos were taken during last years (2015) tour.

Our goal for the Classic this year is to raise $10,000 with donations of $1, $5. That means we'll need thousands of donors to meet our goal. In 2017, I hope to have a similar classic in the states of Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

Please help with a donation of any size by going to SoccerForACure.org (a 501(c)(3)) organization. Please don't think that a $1 donation will not make a difference. It will certainly make a difference for a family in financial distress when combined with many other donations. NO DONATION IS TOO SMALL.

Thanks to all the positive comments regarding the Soccer For A Cure recognition at the Georgia - Missouri football game on October 17, 2015. My family and I had a great time and certainly felt honored and humbled. And, unlike the game in Jacksonville this past weekend, Georgia beat Missouri.

On Saturday (Sept 17, 2011) players and coaches participating in the UAB Soccer For A Cure Classic will tour the cancer wing of the Children's hospital. This event leaves quite an impression on us all. Each year we've provided SFAC t-shirts to parents, patients, and nurses. I just order $120 worth of toddler t-shirts to distribute at the event. If anyone can help with this expense (any amount) please let me know by e-mail to [email protected]

While waiting for a light to change at an intersection, I was behind a truck belonging to a casket company. On the truck the following was displayed: "Helping families honor the lives of those they love".

It made me think of the children in the Alabama Children's Hospital that I've had the honor to meet during the previous year's classics (see the below video. I can't help but wonder how many didn't win their battle and how the families of those children are dealing with their death.

The UAB Soccer For A Cure Classic was the brain child of Mike Getman, the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) head men's soccer Coach. It has been played on the UAB campus each year since 2008 raising donations for the UAB Children's Hospital in...
