This fall, the Southern Regional Education Board is collaborating with the Open Education Association on a field-wide effort to identify national priorities for open education advocacy.

Following last week's tragic events at Westwood Hills Elementary, we are reminded of the important role trained counselors play in supporting school communities through long-term recovery.

The SREB Crisis Recovery Network is recruiting Louisiana school counselors to receive specialized training in long-term crisis response and recovery. Network counselors build response capacity within their own schools and districts while preparing to assist other communities during times of crisis.

Our thoughts are with the Waynesboro community following the recent tragedy at Westwood Hills Elementary School.

Staff took part in a "Day of Support, Connection, and Care," with mental health professionals from Valley Community Services Board, Victims Crisis Assistance Response and SREB's Crisis Recovery Network offering support, and have returned to school. Support is ongoing.

According to Waynesboro Public Schools, Westwood Hills Elementary School will host a Family Open House today from 3-6 p.m. and will reopen for children and families who are ready to return on Thursday.

Districts are spending billions on AI tools for classrooms, but most are left to vet products largely on their own.

In this Stateline article, SREB's Leslie Eaves, who co-led the organization's AI commission, weighs in on how schools should approach these decisions. She says districts should let adults test AI tools before putting them in front of students, and that teachers should always review AI-generated material before using it in the classroom.

More than 30 school counselors from across Texas gathered in Waco this week for training with SREB's Crisis Recovery Network — a regional initiative preparing first-responder counselors to support students and staff after a crisis.
