The Friends of Chattahoochee Bend State Park is the local chapter of the Friends of Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites. Our volunteer organization has built 12+ miles of hiking trails at Georgia's newest state park, and we're now working to build mountain bike trails with equestrian trails to follow. Volunteer participation is the ONLY way trails will be built at The Bend.

The Friends of Chattahoochee Bend finally put the stamp of completion on a multi-month, multi-partner project – Bridge 4 replacement. The first bridge in this spot was simply Privet shrubs that were cut and tossed into the creek to allow trail crews to cross with equipment, so this bridge has had the nickname “The Privet Bridge” ever since. The photos show the original (constructed) Bridge 4 in January 2012, the original bridge undergoing expansion in February 2013, the expanded bridge just prior to the beginning of the project in May, and the new Bridge 4. Fun fact - if you zoom in on the side view photo of the new bridge, you can see one of the posts from the original bridge - it was left in place for historical purposes. Due to erosion of the creek bank, the expanded bridge was falling into the creek and posed a hazard for guests at the park, so it was clear that a new bridge was sorely needed. The new bridge took into account the specifications from the expanded bridge, but everything was upgraded to higher specifications. The new bridge is built to accommodate ATV’s and Side-by-sides in case of trail emergencies, as well as the All-Terrain Track Chairs. This project was funded through a combination of funds from the Friends of Chattahoochee Bend, a Passport Grant from the Friends of Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites, and a grant from Explore-Newnan Coweta, Inc. All construction was accomplished by volunteers of the Friends of Chattahoochee Bend and we'd like to thank everyone who drove a tractor, drove a bolt or screw, cut lumber, and any of the other myriad tasks associated with the construction process. We'd also like to thank our partners Friends of Georgia State Parks and Explore-Newnan Coweta. What an awesome day for Your State Parks Day! Thanks to all the volunteers (and staff) who came out today and worked on a couple of projects. First, we spread fresh mulch on the hillside below our canoe planter. But our true “monumental moment” was placing a bench in the park’s veterans’ tribute area. Volunteers cut and assembled the border, spread mulch, and assembled the bench. Special thanks goes to Friends member Dennis Whaley who did all of the engraving and placing of the medallions on the bench by hand. Want to learn how you can volunteer at a state park? For World Ranger Day, the Friends of Chattahoochee Bend served home-made ice cream with all the fixings to our staff. Peach, vanilla, and chocolate were the flavors of the day, with peach being the most popular (after all, we are in Georgia).
