Mayor's Summer Reading Club

Mayor's Summer Reading Club Mayor's Summer Reading Club is a program of GEEARS: Georgia Early Education Alliance for Ready Students.

We support early learning for Georgia's youngest learners, birth to five. The MSRC is a collaboration between the City of Atlanta, GEEARS (Georgia Early Education Alliance for Ready Students), PNC, the United Way and many great public-private partnerships who work together to promote literacy skills and vocabulary enrichment in children ages birth through eight. Throughout the summer, libraries, summer programs, museums and other institutions in Atlanta will hold “book club reads” to model research based methods of reading books with children and will host enrichment events based upon the stories. The books will come to life as children enjoy arts and crafts activities, drama exercises, and other hands on activities designed to make the language in the stories meaningful to children. This summer, dozens of Mayor’s Summer Reading Club partners hosted more than 100 events across Metro Atlanta, bringing early literacy to life with our new book, "DINOSAUR!" by Olivia Aston Bosworth and illustrated by Alex Ferror. Here are just a few highlights from an incredible summer!

Yesterday, community partners attended the Mayor’s Summer Reading Club’s pre-season training. This favorite annual event introduced the group to “Dinosaur!” this summer’s original picture book.

Participants channeled their inner kids as they dreamed up creative programming for summer events centered around this story. They also explored “Dinosaur’s” READ guide, which will help them maximize the literacy benefits of their read-alouds.

Huge thanks to our partners and contributors!

Over the weekend, Layla Latimore, the teen author of this year’s Mayor's Summer Reading Club book selection, shared her board book at a joyous gathering at South Fulton’s Wolf Creek Library with The Library Dads. It was great to see fathers get together with their little ones to “Build lifetime bonds. Create lifetime readers."

At the West Atlanta Watershed Alliance’s O-Academy Summer Camp, Quanda Spencer made her reading of “Bina’s Harvest” fun and topical! After exploring Bina’s apple orchard with her campers, “Mama Quanda” taught the kids about aquaponics and they snacked on fruit kebobs. We loved seeing this creative programmer connect the summer’s farm-focused MSRC books with real-world agriculture.
