Our Story

There were 954 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in which resuscitation was attempted by EMS in the year 2017 in the Fulton County. There were 81 survivors. That’s 873 Fulton County families who lost a loved one to cardiac arrest in one year. The survival rate was 8.4%. The survival rates in communities across the nation range from 0% to 24%. Nationally the average survival rate is 10.4%. Of the 954 cardiac arrests in Fulton County, less than 4% (34) survived with the very best neurological outcome. One of the major reasons for poor outcomes is low rates of family-initiated CPR in homes. Less than half (39.0%) of all victims of out-of-hospital arrest in Fulton County receive CPR from a layperson bystander who witnessed the arrest. Nationally the layperson bystander CPR rate averages 46.0%

Survivors of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest most always have three things in common: their collapse was sudden and witnessed, someone started CPR immediately, and the victim received a shock from an automatic external defibrillator (AED) in less than a few minutes. In witnessed sudden cardiac arrests when the victim is provided immediate bystander CPR and defibrillated within a few moments with an on-site AED, survival rates have reached as high as 80%. Their survival had less to do with what an ambulance and a hospital did but had much more to do with what happened before EMS arrived. The best way to improve the outcome of cardiac arrests in any community is to educate the layperson public to recognize sudden cardiac arrest, start CPR and apply an AED. Bystander initiated CPR by witnesses and an onsite AED are a victim’s best hope of survival.

Fulton County / City of Atlanta census tracts characterized as low income, low educational achievement, and high African-American or Hispanic and/or mixed racial/ethnic population percentage have been challenged by poor survival rates in out-of-hospital cardiac arrests. These are the “at-risk” populations.
