Our Story
In 2017, a small group of Lakota and Anishinaabe residents of Atlanta decided to found the Atlanta Indigenous Peoples Association to provide support for Atlanta's American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian residents. Many of the approximately 6,000 American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian residents of DeKalb and Fulton Counties come from Native nations whose traditional territories are elsewhere on Turtle Island, and we are visitors living on the homelands of Creek and Cherokee people. Through the organization, we hope to increase visibility for Atlanta's Indigenous population, grow awareness of resources available to Indigenous peoples, especially Indigenous youth, and create opportunities to educate the broader Atlanta population about the diversity of Indigenous peoples.
