This is Mama Amina. She is the sole survivor of her nuclear family from Somalia. She lost her husband and children to war. Since arriving to the US in 2007, she settled in Clarkston, and in spite of not being a citizen, she has worked for the campaigns of every Democratic candidate from local officials to the president. She has been interviewed and featured in media from Atlanta Magazine to NYT to CNN. In her spare time, she volunteers to help newly arrived find their footing. She has opinions on everything: "I don't understand why evil people don't love the LGBT community. The LGBT community has a mother, just like me." She never mentions it, but she lives with other disabilities like congestive heart failure and high blood pressure. Now, Mama has lost her food stamps and health coverage, because she can't afford to file her official citizenship papers ($685)--and now, her citizenship is in jeopardy, simply because she hails from Somalia, and is now on the ban list. She must submit by this Friday, February 3rd. Please, No amount too small! Share far and wide!

Today was swimsuit delivery day at Fatima's family house! Two of the girls who got kicked out of the pool were home, and tore right into the bags! Your total gift included: 2 swimsuits for each person; 7 pool towels, a coverup for the oldest daughter, a plastic woven floor mat, a beach bag, and Swahili/English dictionaries. We had a few swag bags left over from a recent Women's Circle, and one of the daughters immediately put the earrings on (pictured--big silver leaves). Mama Fatima kept telling Samia, "You really came back to help!" THANK YOU to everyone who contributed and for blessing the socks off this family! More photos and exploits to come, as we are now on a quest to get them some kitchen items, sheet sets, and clothes.

Incredibly inspiring evening last night, at the screening of Every Last Child, a powerful documentary on the elimination of polio, and the essential role that women play in community health. Stars and panel included the public health badass, Dr. Elias Durry, WHO's head of polio eradication. Film is available on iTunes. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

In a total dick move, the apartment complex where one of our single, Congolese mamas resides, her 7 kids were kicked out the of pool for not having "proper swim attire". Are you kidding me!??! That said, we're gonna fix that this weekend. $300= 2 swimsuits for each kid (7-17), swim towels, and a mat. Join us in the sheer satisfaction of watching these kids enjoy their first summer in America. You know the drill, tax-deductible, blah blah blah. $300 between now and Sunday? HELL YES! gofundme.com/27phrbw

It's hot. Really hot. And humid. Imagine there's pool, but you can only look at it--you can't go in. You're a single refugee mom of seven, fleeing violence in the DR Congo, and you just got to Atlanta. This a true story. Immaculate's children were banned from swimming at their apartment complex...

A warm heart full of thanks to everyone who made Yasmin's car seat fund an overnight success. Check out the beautiful green seat and party you threw! We turned Saturday's Coffee Klatch into a baby shower for Yasmin--also auspicious, as it was our last meeting before Ramadan. Stay tuned for baby updates. Due date is June 4th!

Noor made a beautiful video of the event. You can view it on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/ahmad.hasson.73/videos/1801413830089522/

Again much love and so many thanks back to you!
