On November 12, 2020, Macon-Bibb Age Friendly (AF) Community held its last meeting of 2020. Macon-Bibb, as you know, was the very "first" AARP/WHO designated Age-Friendly
Community in the United States - now the member list includes six states, one territory, and 486 communities nation-wide.
This was a virtual Zoom meeting/celebration and it was a fun-filled meeting where we celebrated our achievements as well as discussed our 2021 plans to ensure that Macon-Bibb remains a livable community for people of all ages and disabilities. We had several speakers, including Mayor Robert Reichart, Sam Hart, Chairman, Macon Water Authority, as well as Mayor-Elect Lester Miller. We kicked off the meeting with the song "CELEBRATION", waving pom-poms and flowers. At the conclusion, send off notes of "THANK YOU" to Mayor Reichart were waved as the song "ON THE ROAD AGAIN" was being played. Thanks to Myrtle Habersham, AARP Georgia Ambassador, Age Friendly/Livable Communities
for spearheading this successful end-of-year Macon-Bibb AGE-FRIENDLY "Meeting/Celebration 2020 and many thanks to Darius Maynard, Community Foundation' of Central Georgia for providing the music for this occasion.

AARP NETWORK OF AGE-FRIENDLY States and Communities was established in April 2012. The Age-Friendly AARP network helps participating communities become great places to live for people of all ages by adopting such features as safe, walkable streets; improved housing and transportation options; and opportunities for residents to participate in community activities.
The application to join the network is made by the community's highest elected official, its mayor, or,if there is no chief executive, its government body. Once AARP accepts a town, city or county into the network, local leaders,, and residents work to assess the needs of the community, craft an action plan for improvements and then implement and evaluate the efforts. LEARN MORE AT AARP.org/agefriendly.
The AARP network is an affiliate of the World Health Organization (WHO) Age-Friendly cities and communities.
In 2012, with Mayor Robert Reichart being the mayor, the city of Macon and the county of Bibb became the first city and county to be recognized by AARP and the WHO as Age-Friendly communities. AARP Macon Lead Volunteer, Myrtle Habersham was at the forefront of this age-friendly effort with the assistance of Macon AARP Associate State Director, David Pilgrem.
In 2014 the city of Macon and the county of Bibb consolidated their governments into one city Macon/Bibb.
In 2014, Tattnall Square Park was named one of Twelve "Frontline Parks" by the City Parks Alliance. This park was selected because it exemplifies the power of urban parks to build communities and make cities sustainable and vibrant. The WHO in 2014 acknowledged the spectacular work completed at Tattnall Square Park, recognizing it to be an example for the rest of the world to create open spaces with input from the older population, VISIT OUR WEBSITE: https:local.aarp.org/macon-ga/happening.
