Coweta County residents. Please pay attention to this scam alert from the Coweta County Sheriffs Office.

The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office has recently received reports of an online scam involving a fraudulent customer service number, listed for Microsoft, and located through a general search of online search engines, such as Google. These incidents typically begin with a citizen conducting a query of Google for a contact number for Microsoft’s Customer Service department, and then contacting the provided number. The call taker will then provide a series of instructions to the caller that allow the call taker remote access to the citizen’s computer and to their online banking accounts. These fraudulent websites will often closely mimic the actual company websites, but have slight variances in the web address, such as the misspelling of words or inclusion of symbols, e.g., Micro_soft, Micr0soft. Citizens are cautioned to pay close attention to any company websites located through open-source queries, and verify their authenticity through multiple sources.
