Happy 46th Independence Day St. Lucia 🇱🇨

First inhabited by the Arawaks and Caribs, Saint Lucia was colonized by the French and British in the 17th century. Previously called Iyanola by the Arawaks and later Hewanorra by the Caribs, Saint Lucia was also known as Helen of the West Indies due to being frequently switched between French and British control. It was then officially ceded to the British by the French in 1814.

Saint Lucia Independence Day is celebrated annually on February 22 to commemorate the day when Saint Lucia gained its complete independence from the United Kingdom in 1979.

Happy Black History Month ❤️🖤💚💛

Black History Month is an annually observed commemorative month originating in the United States. It is a time to recognize and honor the achievements, contributions, and history of African, Caribbean, and Black Americans all sharing ancestral history that can’t be denied…

To commemorate and celebrate the contributions to our nation made by people of African descent, American historian Carter G. Woodson established “Black History Week”. The first celebration occurred on Feb. 12, 1926. For many years, the second week of February was set aside for this celebration to coincide with the birthdays of abolitionist/editor Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

In 1976, as part of the nation’s bicentennial, the week was expanded into Black History Month.

It is celebrated in February in the United States and Canada, where it has received official recognition from governments, and more recently has also been celebrated in Ireland the United Kingdom where it is observed in October.

BREAKING NEWS: Prior to leaving office, Former President Joe Biden posthumously pardoned the late Marcus Garvey.

Marcus Mosiah Garvey Jr., (17 August 1887 – 10 June 1940), was a Jamaican political activist. He was the founder and first President-General of the “Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League” (UNIA-ACL, commonly known as UNIA), through which he declared himself Provisional President of Africa. He promoted the ideology of Africa being a one-party state, unifying Africans and the African diaspora.

This civil rights leader, who was convicted of mail fraud in 1923, served 4 years in prison in Atlanta before President Calvin Coolidge commuted his sentence in 1927 and deported him to his home country of Jamaica.

Mr. Garvey was ideologically a black nationalist and Pan-Africanist. His ideas came to be known as “Garveyism”. He believed that Black people should become financially independent from white-dominated societies and launched various businesses in the U.S. He also became president of the Black Star Line shipping and passenger company.

The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. credited Mr. Garvey as the first man, on a mass scale and level, to give millions of Black people a sense of dignity and destiny.

Enjoy cuteness and fun over load from some of our members and their pickney (kids) on this snowy day in Houston. Before you go out and make some menteurs of your own, here’s some useful tips from one of our New York snow expert member, Lajas ❄️☃️🏂

1. Yellow snow is NOT for play. Do not eat yellow snow either. ❄️
2. when making snow angels 😇 , both arms and legs need to work together in symmetry so you don’t make snow devils 😈
3. Do not make snow angels in the dog park area. That’s not dirt under the snow. 💩
4. Timberland boots are for fashion, not for snow. Use Vasque gore tex boots. 🥾
5. Yes, you can use two pair of socks and use two pair of socks as hand gloves as well. 🧦
6. Snowballs must be smaller than a grapefruit but larger than apples.
7. this may not be enough snow or right type for a snowman ⛄️

Finally, Houston drivers are not good in summer. There’s no way the roads will be safe in the snow. So, stay home.

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day ✊🏾

On November 2, 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed the King Holiday Bill into law, designating the third Monday in January a federal holiday in observance of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The holiday in his honor is timed to honor Dr. King’s birthday which was on Jan. 15, 1929.

Dr. King was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which protested racial discrimination in federal & state law and civil society. The movement led to several groundbreaking legislative reforms in the United States.

This Civil Rights icon, whose work to end segregation and racism through nonviolence earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, is the ONLY non-president with a federal holiday named in his honor.

The legislation to recognize Martin Luther King Jr. Day was first introduced just four days after his assassination on April 4, 1968. Still, it would take 15 years of persistence by civil rights activists for the holiday to be approved by the federal government and an additional 17 years for it to be recognized in all 50 states.

Today, it is the ONLY federal holiday designated as a “National Day Of Service” to encourage all Americans to volunteer and improve their communities.
