GNPS members enjoyed a special tour of a Gold Certified Native Plant Habitat on Saturday, exploring beautifully designed gardens spanning full sun, part shade, and full shade.

Each space offered inspiration and practical ideas, leaving members with plenty to bring back and incorporate into their own landscapes.

A heartfelt thank-you to Lori L. for hosting such an inspiring tour!

Did you miss our chapter’s largest annual fundraiser last Saturday?

It’s not too late to show your support! Funds raised go directly toward our educational programs, the development of educational gardens, and restoration projects that combat invasive, nonnative plants threatening our natural spaces—along with many other important initiatives.

On Sunday, Michael Cowan—GNPS State Chair and North Metro Atlanta Chapter member—led a wonderful ramble through the old-growth forest remnant at Simpsonwood Park along the Chattahoochee River in Peachtree Corners.

The trail was lined with majestic native trees, including Southern Red Oak, Northern Red Oak, Eastern White Oak, American Beech, and Sourwood—truly a beautiful canopy to walk beneath.

While an overpopulation of deer has impacted much of the understory, participants were still able to spot a variety of native plants, including vines, trilliums, wood sorrel, butterweed, and common rush in the floodplain, along with an impressive stand of river cane.

Closer to the river, the group observed American Sycamore, Hop Hornbeam, Ironwood, and what may be one of the largest Umbrella Magnolia specimens in the Atlanta area.

Although invasive species like Russian olive (Elaeagnus), Chinese privet (Ligustrum), and Japanese stiltgrass (Microstegium) were present, there were more than enough native treasures to make the experience both inspiring and worthwhile.

A great reminder of the beauty—and importance—of protecting and restoring our natural spaces. 💚

Special thanks to Diana Whitlock for making these photos available. Thank you Diana!

Have free time on Saturday, April 18 and want an outdoor adventure in nature? Consider joining our friends at the University of Georgia and Rowen Foundation for a BioBlitz in Dacula, GA.

Bio-blitzes are intensive, short-term biological surveys of an area that leverages the expertise of professionals and amateur biologists and naturalists as well as volunteer community scientists to identify as many species as possible to get a broad "snapshot" of the biodiversity in an area.
