Repost from

Black History Month shouldn’t be limited to the month of February. Let’s normalize having ongoing discussions and explorations of acceptance, equality, Black history and culture all year long.

and discussed overlapping interests and one of the themes that came up during February is that while some past events of Black history are very painful, others are full of joy and accomplishment and celebration. It’s important for kids (and adults too) to understand that Black history includes more than just slavery and the struggle for civil rights. And this month is as good of a time as any to be sure that the narrative about Black history is not solely a story of oppression.

Here are some ideas, and of course, feel free to come up with your own:

Talk about Black heroes and leaders from the past and present. Go beyond Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, Barack Obama, and Rosa Parks. There are so many other people who have emerged as role models for all our children. Discuss the obstacles Black people have overcame to make our lives better - not just better for Black people but for people of all races.

Discuss and explore different items that Black inventors have contributed to society. This nation was not built alone by just one race of people. Many of the things we use in everyday life were invented by Black people. For example: the cell phone, traffic light, the refrigerator, the zipper, the ironing board, peanut butter, and the list goes on!

Learn about the many “famous firsts” in Black history. You can share stories of the individuals who were the “first” to accomplish a great feat. During Black History Month (and every month), try to highlight Black people who’ve paved the way of us and helped to make our lives better.

Follow and for continued content on how to bring Black History Month alive with your kids – not just through focusing on oppression, but rather by celebrating Black leaders, Black culture, Black voices, Black joy.
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🖤🤎

Our Story

Drag Queen Story Hour is just what it sounds like: local drag queens reading stories to children. Created by Michelle Tea and RADAR Productions in San Francisco, DQSH now happens across the Globe, including in the Metro Atlanta area! Drag Queen Story Hour captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity in childhood and gives kids glamorous, positive, and unabashedly q***r role models. In spaces like this, kids are able to see people who defy rigid gender restrictions and imagine a world where people can present as they wish, and where dress-up is real.
