The old idiom about one door closing and another opening certainly applies to Lakeside High School grad and current Vanderbilt University senior Nathan Guzman. Guzman’s summer internship was lost to the pandemic, but his passion for justice reform and helping others led to the creation of VolunTea...

Hi everyone! My name is Alicia Ugenti I am from Westchester County, NY. I am completing my fourth year at Amherst College and I major in Biology and Sexuality, Women's, and Gender Studies and am on the premed track. Some of my passions include running, cooking, hiking, as well as being an advocate for expanding conversations and teaching in higher institutions surrounding the history of racism and LGBTQ+ liberation. I hope to one day become a doctor and be able to use my voice to speak about sexism and racism in medicine and how we can work to fix these inequities. I am hoping to gain more experience teaching students about reading and writing. In the past, I have tutored in Organic Chemistry and Physics and look forward to expanding my teaching potential. The organization I am passionate about supporting is the Marsha B. Johnson Institute, which serves to protect and defend the human rights of black transgender people. Through their work, donations are put towards defending and protecting the lives of Black Trans people and expanding their COVID-19 relief efforts. The link to the Marsha B. Johnson Institute can be found here: https://marshap.org

Hello everyone! My name is Aaron Carpenter and I am a senior at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. I’m majoring in Cellular/Molecular Biology and Psychology with minors in General Business, Gerontology, and Public Health. I intend to pursue a Master’s in Public Health, with a goal of working in health policy and eventually global health. I have previously worked in three separate research laboratories, studying behavioral neuroscience, as well as aging and emotional regulation. I am currently conducting research related to the public health implications of truck driving - I’ve even published three times through the National Conferences on Undergraduate Research and the Society for Neuroscience.

Aside from my academics, I have been heavily involved with my fraternity, Alpha Epsilon Pi, as well as a multitude of diversity initiatives and programmatic efforts to combat hate on my campus and in my community. I’ve served on numerous boards for student organizations and committees for my university’s Office of Admissions and Office of Diversity. Throughout my college career, combating hate and giving back to the community have been two of my main passions.

I am offering tutoring in scientific reading and writing skills, general science, general history, English and writing, as well as offering assistance with interviewing, resume constructing, and professional development. My course load and leadership experiences have given me a wide net of knowledge that qualify me to teach the aforementioned topics. The proceeds for my will be benefiting a local North Carolina non-profit in Watauga and Avery counties known as OASIS. OASIS (Opposing Abuse with Service, Information, and Shelter) is a private, 501(c)3 non-profit organization serving survivors of domestic and sexual violence in Watauga and Avery Counties, North Carolina. You can learn more about OASIS at https://www.oasisinc.org/ -us and donate directly at https://secure.acceptiva.com/?cst=7a03ae.

VolunTeach is proud to stand in solidarity with the movement. Now more than ever, it’s important for us to unite as a community. As of today, our growing team of almost 20 qualified tutors and instructors has agreed to redirect all donations towards these five organizations or an organization of your choice supporting the movement and the fight for racial justice. Starting right now, if you donate 25 or more dollars to any of these organizations, you can receive 1 hour of tutoring/lessons in a variety of subjects, from coding to guitar. All money will go directly from your account to the organization, all we need is a confirmation. Check out our website for more information.
