In a monsoon-dependent country like India, one failed crop can take away a farming family’s entire income.

After losing their crop, Virat's family moved from Yadgiri (in north Karnataka) to Bengaluru, in search of work and better opportunities. Virat joined our partner’s early-learning program, where lessons in math, reading and language helped turn his curiosity into confidence.

Today, he is in Grade 1 and continues to receive after-school support from our partner, which helps children from migrant communities learn and thrive.

A failed crop changed where Virat’s journey began. With the right support, it does not have to determine where it leads.

Sunny has already graduated. From big crayons to even bigger dreams. 🩺

After joining our early-learning partner’s center in 2024, he discovered a love for learning and grew in confidence. Today, he is thriving in Class 1 and has his sights set on becoming a doctor.

For children from migrant communities, early education can turn an uncertain beginning into a strong start.

When a woman experiences abuse, her children carry parts of that story too.

That’s why one of our partners in India -- a safehouse for victims of abuse -- supports more than a mother’s journey towards safety and independence. It also creates a place where her children can begin again.

Here, they return to education, build practical and life skills, receive emotional support, play freely and form friendships. Slowly, uncertainty gives way to routine, confidence and the freedom to simply be children.

Not every child’s education follows the same path.

At our partner shelter for abuse victims and their children, kids who have experienced disruption in their schooling can continue learning through NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) — giving them the flexibility to learn at their own pace and keep moving forward.

For this young learner, today’s lesson is another small step towards a much bigger future.
